ULM Completes Sweep at New Orleans 3-2 Behind Josh Lett?s Complete Game

Baseball

NEW ORLEANS, La.?Josh Lett threw ULM's first complete game in almost two years leading the Warhawks to a 3-2 victory and series sweep at New Orleans Sunday afternoon at Maestri Field.

The Warhawks (12-4, 5-1 Sun Belt) improve to 7-0 on the road this season ? the best mark in the nation ? and have won six straight games. It is the first road sweep in conference play for ULM since 2002 when the Warhawks swept Nicholls State in a Southland Conference series.

Lett's complete game outing is the first since David Mixon went the distance at Lamar on April 23, 2006. The senior's performance on Sunday follows a pair of games when ULM and New Orleans combined to score 52 runs to open the series.

Kyle Suire gave the Warhawks a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a double to right field scoring Jon Prevost and Ben Soignier, who opened the game with back-to-back singles.

Suire finished the weekend with five extra-base hits and eight RBIs while Prevost went 7-for-14 for the series.

Dexter Fontenot scored the winning run in the third inning when the UNO (8-7, 1-4) center fielder dropped a fly ball; Fontenot reached after doubling to left.

The Privateers finally got on the board in the sixth inning scoring on a double steal with runners at first and third. They had a mini rally going in the ninth with two outs after T.J. Baxter was the beneficiary of a double when Matt Laird -- ULM's right fielder -- fell trying to track down a fly ball.

After an infield single, Nick Schwaner hit a blooper to left field scoring Baxter.

The Warhawk defense turned four double plays on the game and Lett helped his own cause by issuing only one walk on the afternoon.

Bryan Cryer (3-1) was tagged with the loss for New Orleans despite allowing just three runs ? one earned ? on eight hits through seven innings while striking out seven.

The Warhawks step out of conference for a pair of midweek games at Centenary on Tuesday and against Southern Mississippi at home on Wednesday. First pitch on Tuesday night is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
