LAFAYETTE, La.?Josh Lett remained perfect in Sun Belt
Conference action leading ULM to a 14-4 win over Louisiana-Lafayette Sunday
afternoon at Tigue Field securing the Warhawks sixth Sun Belt series victory of
the season in as many tries.
Lett (6-1) is now 5-0 in Sun Belt games after allowing just
a pair of runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work.
After being held hitless on Saturday, the ULM (22-12, 14-4 Sun Belt) duo of Kyle Suire
and Ben Soignier combined to go 8-for-12 from the plate scoring five runs and driving
in nine.
Suire blasted his seventh and eighth home runs of the season
and accounted for six of the RBIs, while Soignier tossed the final 3.1 innings
on the mound picking up his third save of the year. It was the first home runs for Suire since he hit two at New Orleans on March 15.
Nick Maragas also had a big day for the Warhawks going
3-for-4 with his fourth home run of the season.
Nick Wade and Matt Laird also recorded a pair of hits and scored twice.
On the weekend, ULM scored a
combined 39 runs and pounded out 45 hits against Louisiana-Lafayette (17-17,
8-10) who entered the weekend leading the Sun Belt in ERA (4.61) and batting
average against (.266) ? ULM
hit .378 for the series.
The Warhawks broke open a 4-2 game with four runs in the top
of the eighth and sixth in the top of the ninth. Suire and Soignier drove in seven of the
Warhawks runs in the final two frames.
The Ragin' Cajuns got on the board in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly
by Matt Goulas. It would be their only
run until the sixth inning as Lett settled into the game.
Matt Collins tied the game with a single to center field
scoring yesterday's hero Dexter Fontenot.
Fontenot hit two home runs and drove in seven runs in the Warhawks 15-6
victory over ULL in the second game of the series.
Suire gave the Warhawks the lead for good with his first blast of the game off
ULL starter Michael Cook in the bottom of the third inning.
The two-run homer also scored Soigner who kept the inning alive with a
two-out single to center.
The lead swelled to 4-1 in the top of the sixth inning on a
single back up the middle by A.J. Siggers after Fontenot led off the inning
with a double.
ULL pulled within a run in the bottom of the inning as Will
Long drew a bases loaded walk. Soignier
moved from short to the pitcher's mound and struck out Blaine LaFleur to end
the inning.
Scott Hawkins and Chance Harst hit back-to-back homers in
the bottom of the eighth inning for ULL. Cook (4-3) took the loss allowing four runs on seven hits in six innings.
The Warhawks step out of conference for a pair of games on
Tuesday and Wednesday evening. ULM hosts Centenary on Tuesday and McNeese State
on Wednesday with both games starting at 6:30 p.m. The
Warhawks square off against Middle Tennessee (18-14, 9-8) next weekend at
Warhawk Field.
