ULM Completes Sweep of Middle Tennessee with 16-8 Victory on Sunday

Baseball
MONROE, La.?ULM capped off an incredible week with an exclamation point Sunday afternoon completing a three-game Sun Belt Conference sweep of Middle Tennessee 16-8 at Warhawk Field.  The Warhawks hit four home runs in the series finale and finished the weekend with 12 long balls.

It is the third sweep in seven Sun Belt series this season for the Warhawks (27-12, 17-4 Sun Belt) and comes against a Middle Tennessee squad that entered the weekend on a seven-game win streak.

The Warhawks maintain their 3.5 game lead atop the conference standings with just nine Sun Belt games remaining on the schedule.  ULM has road series at Florida International (13-29, 6-12) and South Alabama (22-18, 9-9) in the next two weeks before closing out the home schedule against Troy (24-17, 12-6).

Kyle Suire moved into a tie for ninth place on the ULM single-season home run list and eighth on the career list with his 11th and 12th home runs of the season.  He now has 22 in his brief two-year career with the Warhawks after transferring from LSU-Eunice.   The senior second baseman finished the game 2-for-5 with five RBIs.

The Warhawks went 5-0 for the week averaging 15.6 runs and 17.6 hits per game with 18 home runs and a .442 team batting average.   Since the beginning of the Louisiana-Lafayette series last weekend (eight games) the Warhawks have hit 24 home runs and are averaging 14.6 runs and 16.6 hits per game.

Dexter Fontenot continued to rip the cover off the ball going 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and his third home run of the weekend.  He finished the week hitting .650 (13-for-20) with two doubles, four home runs, 15 RBIs and a 1.350 slugging percentage.

ULM got all the runs it needed in the bottom of the second inning putting a nine spot on the board with eight coming before an out was recorded.  After the first three batters of the inning reached, Nick Maragas cleared the bases with his 10th double of the season.

The Warhawks loaded the bases again with an RBI single by Matt Laird and a pair of hit batters.  Suire then took a 3-2 pitch from Middle Tennessee (20-17-1, 9-11) starter Jordan Alvis over the wall in right field for a grand slam.

Ben Soignier hit his 11th home run of the season in the sixth inning capping a 3-for-3, two-RBI performance at the plate.  The junior also picked up his second victory on the mound tossing the final 4.2 innings allowing two runs ? one earned ? on five hits.

Ryan McMillan and Josh Chappell each went 2-for-4 while Maragas finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

Middle Tennessee pulled within 12-7 in the top of the sixth inning behind the strength of Rawley Bishop's 12th home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth, and a throwing error by the Warhawks in the sixth.

The Warhawks fought back in the bottom of the frame as Chappell and Maragas had back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Laird drove home his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly.  Following an out, Soignier crushed a 2-2 fastball from Langdon Stanley over the scoreboard in left field extending the lead out to 15-7.  Suire made it back-to-back blasts with his second of the game, marking the second time in as many Sundays that he has hit two homers in a game.

Alvis (3-2) took the loss allowing eight runs on five hits in just one inning of work.

The Warhawks wrap up their six-game homestand Wednesday night against Grambling State beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Warhawk Field.
