MONROE, La.?ULM used a pair of big innings to cruise past Grambling State 17-5 Wednesday night at Warhawk
Field extending its win streak out to a season-high eight games.
Reigning National Hitter of the Week Dexter Fontenot
continued his torrid pace going 2-for-6 with three RBIs. The senior outfielder extended his hit streak
out to nine games and has taken over the team lead with 51 RBIs on the season.
A.J. Siggers belted out three hits and recorded a pair of
RBIs while Ben Soignier and Kyle Suire both recorded multiple hits and two
RBIs. Josh Chappell went 3-for-5 and Jon
Prevost was 2-for-3 as the Warhawks improved to 28-12 on the season.
The Warhawks have now won 23 of the last 24 meetings between
the two schools and have scored 10 or more runs in 21 of the 24 outings.
Devin Pourciau (3-1) tossed a pair of scoreless innings
allowing a hit and striking out one to pick up the win for the Warhawks. Scott Stephen, Drew Graham and Derek Ward
also recorded scoreless innings on the mound for ULM.
After Grambling (17-21) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second
inning on a single to center field by Manny Kumar, the Warhawks responded with
a pair in the bottom half of the frame.
Soignier led off the inning with his 12th home
run of the season and seventh in the last 17 games. He moves into a tie with teammate Kyle Suire for
eight place all-time with 22 in his career.
Ryan McMillan singled home Suire tying the game at 2-2.
The Warhawks put the game out of reach in the fourth pushing
five runs across the plate. Soignier
drove home the first run with a single to left and a passed ball allowed
Prevost to score extending the lead to 4-2.
Fontenot doubled pushing the score out to 6-2 and Siggers
closed out the inning with a single to left.
Five straight ULM
batters recorded RBIs in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Warhawks
pushed seven runs across the plate extending the lead out to 14-2.
After the Tigers scored three runs in the top of the eight,
Darren Sutton and Suire hit back-to-back doubles taking the lead out to 15-5. Casey Auttonberry drew a bases loaded walk
and Louie Lancaster singled to left to cap the scoring for the Warhawks.
Byron Brown (0-6) took the loss for the Tigers allowing
seven runs ? six earned ? on 10 hits in five innings of work. Grambling
State pitchers walked 11
batters on the game and struck out just four.
The Warhawks travel down to Miami, Fla.,
this weekend for a three-game set against Florida International. The Golden Panthers (14-29, 6-12) defeated
No. 1 Miami 6-3 tonight.
