Florida International Halts ULM?s Eight-Game Win Streak 9-6 in Series Opener

Baseball
MIAMI, Fla.?Riding a wave of emotion following an upset of No. 1 Miami on Wednesday, Florida International defeated ULM 9-6 Friday night at University Park ending the Warhawks eight-game win streak.

Ryan Mollica turned the game in the bottom of fifth inning with an inside-the-park home run off the wall in left field giving the Golden Panthers (15-29, 7-12 Sun Belt) a 6-3 lead after the Warhawks (28-13, 17-5) had pulled within one in the top half of the frame.

After the Warhawks had stranded six runners through the first four innings, Ryan McMillan broke the drought with a bases-loaded double to the gap in right-center field scoring A.J. Siggers, Jon Prevost and Ben Soignier.

Soignier and Suire led the Warhawks going 3-for-5 from the dish. ULM belted out 12 base hits on the night but failed to score 10 runs for just the second time in the past 10 games.

FIU jumped out to a 4-0 lead scoring on a double play in the bottom of the second inning and a three-run homer by Kevin Mirabal ? his first of the season ? in the fourth.

ULM tied a season-high turning four double plays pushing its season total to 51 ? just eight off the school record for a season.

The Golden Panthers scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning sparked by a double by Mollica pushing the lead out to a comfortable 8-3 margin. Mollica finished the game 3-for-5 extending his hit streak out to 27 games.

Suire hit his 13th home run of the season ? a monster shot over the scoreboard in left field ? in the top of the seventh pulling the Warhawks within 8-4. He moves into a tie for seventh on the career homer list with 23 and now sits in a tie for sixth on the single-season list.

ULM added a pair in the top of the ninth inning on a single by Suire and a double by Siggers.

Jared Jennings (3-3) was tagged with the loss for ULM allowing six runs on nine hits in just four innings of work.

Corey Polizzano (4-5) garnered the win for FIU allowing four runs on nine hits through seven innings of work.

The teams take to the diamond again tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. with the Warhawks needing a win to keep from losing their first Sun Belt Conference series of the season.
