South Alabama Slips Past ULM 12-11 in Extra Innings

MOBILE, Ala.?Bunky Kateon hit a game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning spoiling a dramatic ULM comeback as South Alabama defeated the visiting Warhawks 12-11 Sunday afternoon at Stanky Field to clinch the Sun Belt Conference weekend series.

The Warhawks (31-17, 19-8 Sun Belt) tied the game at 11-11 in the top of the ninth inning with a pair of two-out runs and thought they had scored the go-ahead run on an infield single by Kelvin York, but the freshman pinch hitter was called out at first on a close play to end the inning.

The first three batters of the Jaguars' half of the 10th inning reached base on a hit batter, walk and a single. Derek Ward then got Chris Davis to ground into a fielder's choice for the first out inning brining up Kateon who hit a 2-2 pitch foul down the left field line allowing Derek O'Reilly to score the winning run.

Ben Soignier led off the ULM ninth drawing a walk and moved to second on a single by Dexter FontenotRyan McMillan pulled the Warhawks within one with a single to center and Matt Collins tied the game with another single to center.

Soignier finished the game 3-for-4 from the plate and scored four times tying him with Corey Taylor for the ULM single-season runs scored record with 73.  

A.J. Siggers had a pair of triples and an outstanding leaping catch at the wall in the bottom of the ninth inning, while McMillan, Fontenot and Collins all had a pair of hits.

ULM spotted South Alabama (28-20, 13-11) a six run lead after the first inning as the Jaguars touched up ULM starter Jordy Poche with the big blows coming on a three-run home run by David Doss and a two-run double by Sean Laird.

The Warhawks rallied back to take a 7-6 lead following the top of the fourth inning.  Home runs by Fontenot and Nick Maragas accounted for three runs in the second, while Siggers had an RBI triple in the third and Soignier hit a two-run homer in the fourth.

South Alabama tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth before the Warhawks came right back with a run in the top of the fifth to regain the lead 8-7.

The back-and-forth affair continued with the Jaguars scoring two in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 10-8 lead.

ULM scored again in the seventh and South Alabama added one in the eight to set up the dramatic finish.

Ward was tagged with a hard-luck loss allowing one run over the final 1.2 innings, while Greg Johnson was awarded with the win after blowing the save allowing two runs on three hits in two innings of work.

The Warhawks, who do not have any midweek games due to finals, will host Troy this upcoming weekend in the final Sun Belt series of the season for ULM.  The Warhawks have a two-game lead over New Orleans and a three-and-a-half game lead over Troy following Sunday's action.
