Men?s Basketball Holds Off Grambling for 10-Point Victory

MONROE, La. – Junior forward Lawrence Gilbert scored a team-high 18 points as the ULM men's basketball team earned a 76-66 victory over Grambling State on Tuesday night (Nov. 24) in front of 2,876 fans at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

Senior guard Dynile Forbes added 17 points and junior forward Rudy Turner scored 14 and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for the Warhawks (3-2) in a contest that featured 54 total fouls and a combined 69 free throw attempts.

ULM and Grambling State (1-3) both came out strong, shooting over 60 percent in the opening seven minutes of the contest. Forbes powered the quick start for the Warhawks scoring eight early points on two triples and a pair of free throws to give ULM a 17-13 lead with 12:35 to play in the first half.

A 7-0 run by the Warhawks pushed ULM's lead to 25-14 with nine minutes remaining the in opening stanza. Forbes ignited the run with an up-and-under scoop shot, Gilbert then buried a triple and freshman guard Colby Carr made a reverse lay-up. ULM held Grambling State scoreless for five minutes during the stretch.

Gilbert hit a triple just before the end of the first half to give ULM a 39-26 lead heading into the intermission. Gilbert was 3-of-4 from deep in the first half for nine points, he also had four assists. Forbes led the Warhawks with 13 points in the opening 20 minutes while senior guard Tony Hooper had five assists. ULM shot 56.5 percent (13-of-23) in the first half, including 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from three-point range.

Lance Fuertado scored 13 points to lead Grambling State at the break.

The Tigers trimmed the ULM advantage back to single-digits, 44-35, just over four minutes into the second half. ULM responded to the Grambling State burst with a 10-0 run to take a 54-35 lead with 13:16 to play in the contest. Six of the 10 points in the Warhawk run came from the free-throw line.

Grambling State answered right back with a 10-0 run of its own, cutting ULM's lead back to 54-45 midway through the second half.

ULM continued to aggressively attack the basket offensively, scoring all of its next nine points from the free-throw line to take a 64-47 lead with seven minutes to play in the game.

Trailing by nine with two minutes to play, Grambling State had a chance to cut the ULM lead to its smallest margin since the 10:31 mark of the first half, but a turnover by the Tigers helped ULM preserve the win.

ULM made 22-of-31 free throw attempts in the second half (71 percent) while Grambling made 20-of-22 free throws (90.9 percent) in the second stanza.


Fuertado finished the contest with 23 points to lead all scorers. Torez Young added 15 points and Ariece Perkins chipped in 11 for the Tigers.

The Warhawks will return to action on Friday (Nov. 27) as they travel to Centenary to play the Gents. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
