Men?s Basketball Races Past the University of the Southwest

MONROE, La. – Junior forward Rudy Turner scored a team-high 20 points to lead five Warhawks in double-figures as the ULM men's basketball team defeated the University of the Southwest, 99-70, on Monday night (Dec. 28) at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

Senior guard Dynile Forbes scored 19 points and grabbed a career-best seven rebounds, junior forward Tommie Sykes and senior guard Tony Hooper each scored 16 and junior forward Lawrence Gilbert added 11 in the victory.

ULM (5-8) fell behind by five early, 18-13, on the third three-pointer by the University of the Southwest with 13:53 to play in the first half. The Warhawks answered with a 12-2 run to take a five-point lead of their own, 25-20, with 9:25 left in the opening stanza. Senior guard Jarvis Hill scored four during the burst for the Warhawks.

Following another triple by the Mustangs, ULM used a 9-2 spurt to take a nine-point advantage, 34-25. Turner scored six of the nine during the stretch for the Warhawks.

Three-point shooting helped keep the University of the Southwest close as Brant Etheridge made back-to-back triples to pull the Mustangs within three, 41-38, with just over two minutes left in the first half.

ULM scored the final seven points of the half to take a 50-40 lead into the intermission. Turner led all scorers with 18 points before the break on a perfect 8-of-8 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. The Warhawks shot 64.3 percent (18-of-28) from the floor in the first half and committed just three turnovers.

The University of the Southwest connected on seven three-pointers in the first half, Richie Lewis led the Mustangs with 10 points in the first half.

The Warhawks and Mustangs traded baskets early in the second half, as the ULM lead never reached more than 12, but never fell below eight in the opening five minutes of the second half.

A pair of free throws by Forbes stretched ULM's lead to 14 points, 63-49, with 14:58 left in the contest, but the University of the Southwest scored seven of the next nine to cut the Warhawks' lead back to single-digits.

A 12-2 run gave ULM an 89-67 lead, its largest lead to that point, with 3:40 remaining. Gilbert scored the final five points of the run for the Warhawks.

The Warhawks shot 60.7 percent (34-of-56) from the field in the contest.

Demetrius Evans led the University of the Southwest with 19 points.

Freshman guard Robert Nelson also saw his first action of the season in the contest for the Warhawks, Nelson is also a defensive back on the Warhawk football team and suited up for the first time with the basketball team on Monday night.

The Warhawks return to action on Thursday (Dec. 31) when they host Troy in a New Year's Eve matinee at 2 p.m. in Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
