Last Second Shot Lifts Louisiana Tech Over Men?s Basketball

MONROE, La. – Senior guard Tony Hooper scored 23 points and junior forward Tommie Sykes added 15 and nine rebounds, but the ULM men's basketball team fell to Louisiana Tech, 76-73, on a last-second shot Wednesday night (Dec. 2) at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

With the scored tied, 73-73, Kyle Gibson drained a three-pointer from the corner as time expired to give the Bulldogs the victory.

ULM (3-4) jumped out quickly, taking an 11-4 lead just 3:44 into the contest on Hooper's second trifecta. of the night Louisiana Tech answered with a 12-4 run to take its first lead of the contest, 16-15, with 13 minutes remaining in the half.

With the game tied, 21-21, the Bulldogs used a 6-0 burst to take a 27-21 lead with 5:30 to play before the break.

Louisiana Tech's (6-1) lead grew to seven, 39-32, its largest of the first half, on a layup with seven seconds to play in the period. But freshman guard Colby Carr raced down to the other end and got a layup just before the buzzer to cut Louisiana Tech's lead to five, 39-34, at the break. 

Hooper led all scorers with 17 points in the first half on 6-of-10 shooting, including 5-of-7 from beyond the three-point line. Gibson led the Bulldogs with 10 points in the first half. Magnum Rolle added seven points and eight rebounds in the opening 20 minutes for Louisiana Tech.

After ULM got the first basket of the second half, Louisiana Tech answered with a 9-2 spurt to take a 48-37 lead three minutes into the second stanza.

The Warhawks answered right back, scoring seven quick points. Sykes started the burst with a pair of free throws, junior forward Rudy Turner then converted an old-fashioned three-point play and senior guard Dynile Forbes got a steal and layup to cut the Louisiana Tech lead to four, 51-47, forcing a Bulldogs timeout. Following the timeout, Sykes made two more free throws to pull ULM within two, 51-49, midway through the half. 

Louisiana Tech pushed its lead back out to six with 6:23 to play, but the Warhawks continued to battle, evening the score, 68-68, on a back-to-back layups by Sykes with 3:06 remaining.

A pair of free throws by Gibson gave Louisiana Tech a 73-70 advantage with 32 seconds left in the contest. The Warhawks then came down the court and called their final timeout, setting up a triple from the wing by junior forward Lawrence Gilbert to tie the game, 73-73, with 15 seconds to play.

Without a timeout, the Bulldogs found Gibson in the corner and he made the game-winning shot just as time expired. Gibson finished with a game-high 26 points to lead the Bulldogs. DeAndre Brown added 16 points for Louisiana Tech.

ULM shot 76.7 percent (23-of-30) from the free-throw line, but shot just 38.2 percent (21-of-55) from the field. Louisiana Tech went 27-of-61 (44.3 percent) from the floor while making just 15-of-25 (60 percent) free throws. 

The Warhawks return to the road this Saturday (Dec. 5) when they travel to Alabama. Game time against the Crimson Tide is scheduled for noon.
