MONROE, La. –Senior guard Dynile Forbes scored a game-high 23 points, but the ULM men's basketball team fell, 72-67, to Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday (Jan. 30) at Fant-Ewing Coliseum. Junior forward Rudy Turner added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Warhawks.

Senior guard Tony Hooper recorded one steal in the contest, giving him 202 in his career, tying him with Brian Spencer (1985-88) for the ULM career steals record. Hooper finished the contest with five points and four assists.

ULM held a one-point lead at the intermission, but Louisiana-Lafayette took control of the contest early in the second half and held on of a five-point victory.

A 7-0 run helped ULM jump out to an early 13-8 lead in the first five-and-a-half minutes of the contest. Junior forward Lawrence Gilbert ignited the burst for the Warhawks and Turner added a pair of baskets around the rim to give ULM the five-point lead.

Louisiana-Lafayette answered with the next eight points to take a 16-13 lead before ULM scored seven-straight to regain the lead, 20-16, at the midway point of the first half.

The Warhawks lead reached as much as seven before a 6-0 run by Louisiana-Lafayette trimmed the ULM lead to just one, 30-29, with 1:46 to play before the intermission.

ULM took a one-point lead, 32-31, into the break, Forbes and Turner paced the Warhawks with 11 points each, Turner added seven rebounds in the opening 20 minutes. Lamar Roberson led Louisiana-Lafayette with 10 points in the opening stanza.

The Warhawks and Ragin' Cajuns shot nearly identical percentages in the first 20 minutes as ULM went 48.1 percent (13-of-27) from the field while Louisiana-Lafayette shot 48.4 percent (15-of-31).

Louisiana-Lafayette reclaimed the lead with a three-pointer early in the second half and maintained an advantage until Hooper buried a triple to tie the contest, 37-37, with 14:15 remaining. The Warhawks then took the lead on a layup by Forbes before Louisiana-Lafayette scored the next six to lead 43-39.

ULM pulled back within a pair, but Louisiana-Lafayette used a 7-0 to push its lead to nine, 52-43, with 5:45 to play.

The Warhawks cut the Louisiana-Lafayette lead to five on an old-fashioned three-point play by sophomore guard Brandon Williams, but the Ragin' Cajuns responded, pushing their lead to 11, the largest of the game, 63-52, with 2:22 left in the contest.

ULM continued to battle back and, after Louisiana-Lafayette missed a pair of free throws; Forbes buried a trifecta to bring the Warhawks within four, 66-62, with 48 seconds to play. That was as close as the Warhawks would get as Louisiana-Lafayette made its final six free throws to earn the road victory.

Tyren Johnson scored a game-high 19 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out seven assists to lead Louisiana-Lafayette.

ULM will be back in action on Thursday (Feb. 4) when the Warhawks host Western Kentucky at Fant-Ewing Coliseum. Game time against the Hilltoppers is scheduled for 7 p.m.
