Softball Earns Five-Inning Mercy Rule Victory over Houston Baptist

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas –Janel Salanoa hit her third home run of the season and Kandace Causey earned her first win of the season with a four-hit shutout as the ULM softball team defeated Houston Baptist, 8-0, in a five-inning, mercy rule on Saturday at the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Invitational.

Salanoa and Sarah Carriger each had a pair of runs batted in for ULM (5-8) while Melissa Rivera had two hits for the Warhawks in the victory.  

After retiring Houston Baptist (4-6) in order in the top of the first, took the lead with a pair of runs in the first. Brianna Love walked to open the bottom of the frame and, following a pair of strike outs, Salanoa gave the Warhawks the lead with a home run to left centerfield.

Still leading 2-0, ULM doubled its advantage with two more in the bottom of the third. Love tripled to right center to begin the inning and scored on an illegal pitch during Amanda Sartoris' plate appearance, Sartoris would eventually draw a walk. Three batters later, Sartoris scored on a ground out by Michelle Farrell-Fink.

In the top of the fourth, Causey's no-hitter was broken up by a one-out single to right center; Causey had retired the first 10 batters she faced. Following another single, Causey retired the next two Houston Baptist batters with a strikeout and a ground out to end the Huskies threat.

After scoring another run in the fourth on an RBI by Sartoris, ULM scored three runs in the fifth to earn the 8-0, mercy rule-shortened victory. Salanoa opened the inning with a walk before Farrell-Fink was hit by a pitch. Houston Baptist recorded an out and then Rivera hit an RBI single to right center for the Warhawks sixth run of the game. Two batters later, Carriger doubled to right center, driving in a pair of runs to end the contest.

Causey (1-0) finished with seven strikeouts, four hits and no walks while picking up her first win in the circle this season for ULM.

Kristi Malpass (1-2) suffered the loss for Houston Baptist, she threw two innings, allowing four runs, all earned, with three hits, four walks and three strikeouts. Jammie Weidert finished the game in the circle for the Huskies; she threw 2.2 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, with five hits, two strikeouts and a walk.

ULM will conclude play at the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Invitational tomorrow when they play North Dakota at 10 a.m. and host-Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at noon.
