MONROE,
La.-Grambling State
ended a 13-game losing streak to ULM as the Tigers defeated the Warhawks
15-5
Wednesday night at
Warhawk Field. Grambling scored 10 unearned runs as the
Warhawks committed a season-high seven errors.
The Warhawks, who
have played
16 of their first 25 games away from home this season, have now lost six
straight games after winning 2-of-3 from New Orleans two weekends ago.
The game
was the first of four straight for ULM at home after five straight games
away
from Warhawk Field.
John Brown (1-1)
was
outstanding on the mound for Grambling as he allowed just one unearned
run on
two hits over five innings of work. He struck out four and walked four.
ULM starter John
McDermid
struggled with his control as he walked three batters in two-thirds of
an
inning of work. The Tigers took advantage of the free passes scoring
four runs
on three hits in the opening frame. The lead grew to 6-0 as Grambling
(9-13)
plated a pair of unearned runs in the second.
Shane Ardoin hit
his first
career home run for the Warhawks on a towering blast to left field in
the
bottom of the eighth inning to plate three runs. He finished the game
2-for-4
with a pair of runs scored.
Jordy Poche scored
the
Warhawks (9-16) first run of the game when he came home on a dropped pop
up by
the Tigers in the bottom of the third.
Four more unearned
runs by
Grambling in the fifth extended the lead out to 10-1. Steve Kletke had
the big
blow of the inning with a two-run homer over the left-field wall.
Caleb Clowers, who
picked up
his 14th multi-hit game of the season, drove home Ardoin with
a
double down the right-field line in the bottom of the seventh. Ardoin
led off
the inning with a single to left and moved to second on a wild pitch.
Clowers
was 3-for-5 on the night and has now recorded multiple hits in 10 of his
last
16 starts.
Adrian Turner, who
entered in
place of Kletke, led off the eighth with a solo home run to right and
the
Tigers scored four more unearned runs in the inning as the Warhawks
committed
four errors in the frame.
McDermid (0-2) was
charged
with the loss for the Warhawks after allowing four runs on one hit.
Austin
Young, who was making his first appearance of the season, retired the
first six
batters he faced out of the bullpen.
The Warhawks host
three-time
defending America East Conference Champion Binghamton this weekend for a
three-game set. The teams open the series with a single game Friday at 7 p.m.
before playing a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. There will be
an
