NATCHITOCHES, La. - Kandace
Causey blanked the Northwestern State softball team on Wednesday evening and
Sarah Carriger and Melissa Rivera each tallied three hits as ULM won 4-0.
The Warhawks scored three runs in the first
two innings and Causey held the Lady Demons to four hits and no more than two
baserunners in an inning.
Brianna Love led ULM (17-17) with two runs
scored after reaching on two walks. Carriger and Elise West also scored for the
Warhawks. Causey (6-6) picked up the complete game victory. She walked six, but
was unable to record a strikeout.
Northwestern State (20-19) was led by four
different players who recorded a base hit in the defeat.
ULM hit the scoreboard first in the opening
frame to take a quick 1-0 lead. Carriger hit a bloop single to left field
and stole second on a strikeout. Two batters later Rivera hit a single
to center field to push Carriger across the plate.
The Warhawks scored a pair of runs after two
outs to extend their lead to 3-0 after two frames of play. West and Love reached on a hit-by-pitch and walk, before Carriger hit a RBI
single up the middle. Roxy Cassel followed with nearly the exact same hit up
the middle for an RBI single of her own.
Love reached base in the fourth inning on a
base on balls and scored ULM's fourth run of the game. Carriger followed the
walk with a dribbling single down the first-base line and Northwestern State
made several pickoff attempts, but failed to get either runner out, as Love
scored from first and Carriger advanced to second base.
Kelee Grimes (4-5) was tagged with loss after
giving up three earned runs on five hits. She struck out four and walked two in
three innings of work.
ULM begins an eight-game home stand on Saturday
against Western Kentucky with a doubleheader that begins at 4 p.m. The two
teams will square off on Sunday at 12 p.m. in the third game of the series.
