ULM Rallies Fall Short at Tulane

Baseball

NEW ORLEANS - ULM rallied from a pair of five-run deficits but could never get over the hump as Tulane defeated the Warhawks 8-5 Tuesday night at Greer Field.

Tulane (27-19) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after four innings only to see the Warhawks (16-28) storm back with a three-run sixth inning to pull within two.

The Green Wave pulled back in front by five with three in the seventh thanks to an RBI single by Jeremy Schaffer and a two-run single by Garrett Cannizaro. Schaffer put Tulane on the board with his 11th home run of the season - a solo shot in the second.

ULM rallied again with two runs in the eighth. Boomer Blanchard was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved to third on Judd Edwards' second single of the game. Kelvin York drove home Blanchard with a sacrifice fly and Josh Gill delivered a pinch hit single to score Edwards. Nick Wade came off the bench and represented the tying run with two outs. Tulane countered with its closer Nick Pepitone who got Wade to ground out to end the threat.

Cannizaro, Brandon Boudreaux, Schaffer and Brennan Middleton all had two hits on the night for Tulane. Jarrett Hammond led the Warhawks going 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Middleton doubled with the bases loaded in the fourth to increase Tulane's lead to 4-0. Boudreaux followed with a single up the middle to score Middleton.

The Warhawks strung together four straight singles to open the sixth inning which led to a three-run frame. Caleb Clowers scored on a single by York through the left side with the bases loaded, Blanchard scored on a double play grounder and Edwards scored on a single by Hammond.

Matt Petiton (4-3) tossed 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win for the Green Wave. He allowed three runs on six hits. Pepitone worked the final 1 1/3 innings for his sixth save of the season.

Devin Pourciau (0-1) took the loss for the Warhawks. He held Tulane to just one run through the first three innings before running into trouble in the fourth. Pourciau was charged with five runs - four earned -- on six hits.

ULM returns to Warhawk Field on Wednesday night to begin a four-game homestand. The Warhawks take on McNeese  State Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. before playing host to Troy over the weekend in Sun Belt Conference action.
