MONROE, La. – Strong starts to the 2014 season earned Mitch Lane from football Warhawk Male of the Week and Marcela Araya from volleyball Warhawk Female of the Week, announced Tuesday.
It marks the fourth weekly honor in the last two days for Lane who came up big for the Warhawks in the season opening win against Wake Forest. Lane finished the game with six total tackles (four solo, two assist) and one interception.
Lane also won Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week, Louisiana Defensive Player of the Week and College Sports Madness SBC Defensive Player of the Week.
Lane's fourth interception of his career came with just over four minutes to play in the third quarter and he was able to return the interception 31 yards for a touchdown to even the contest at 10-all. The junior's pick six was highlighted on ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10 and it came in at the number three spot.
The ULM defense was strong all night as it held Wake Forest to -3 rushing yards and just 94 yards of total offense. The Demon Deacons only managed to run six of their 49 plays in Warhawk territory.
Araya became ULM's all-time leading digger over the weekend as she broke the school record for career digs. She racked up 66 digs over four matches for a 5.50 digs per set average.
The San Jose, Costa Rica native surpassed Cathy Trsar's (1995-98) record of 1,294 and upped her total to 1,327.
Araya's defensive efforts led ULM to a pair of wins over the weekend, including a 3-0 sweep over Mississippi State. Araya dove around for 23 digs in that three-set match to set her season-high. She also played a pivotal role in the team's 3-0 victory over Texas-Pan American with 17 digs and four assists.
It marks the sixth career Warhawk of the Week award for Araya, who won five times last season including twice in the sand.
