ULM Falls in Middle Game to Arkansas State

Baseball

MONROE, La. -- ULM led 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, but a 52 minute rain delay quieted the Warhawk offense as Arkansas State rallied for an 11-3 win Saturday night at Warhawk Field.

Like it did in game one of the series, the Warhawks plated the game's first run. With two runners in scoring in position and two outs, Jacob Stockton raced home on a passed ball to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead after two innings of action.

In the fourth inning, the Warhawks pushed their lead to 2-0 as Nathan Pugh drew a bases loaded walk with one out. Pugh picked up his 20th RBI of the season as Justin Stawychny trotted home to put ULM up by two runs.

In the top of the fifth, Arkansas State evened the game at 2-2 as one earned run (Joe Schrimpf) and one unearned run (Jeremy Brown) crossed home plate.

ULM answered right back with a one-out solo homer to right field off of the bat of Kodie Tidwell. Tidwell's second homer of the season gave ULM a 3-2 advantage. Later in the frame the Warhawks put runners on the corners thanks to a pair of one-out hits. After the second out of the inning, Stockton had a 1-0 count before the game was halted due to rain. After the 52 minute delay, Arkansas State changed pitchers, bringing in Chandler Hawkins who recorded the final out of the fifth inning.

In the top of the sixth inning, Arkansas State plated four runs to take a 6-3 lead. All four runs came with two outs as the Red Wolves took their first lead of the weekend. In the eighth, Arkansas State added an unearned run to push the lead to four runs (at 7-3). An inning later the Red Wolves tallied a grand slam to increase its lead to 11-3. The runs scored by Arkansas State in the top of the ninth concluded the scoring in the game.

ULM starter Trey Setzer (5-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing four earned runs (five total) on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. Josh Leone, Logan Dopson and Weston Mason closed out the game for the Warhawks on the bump.

Four different Warhawks tallied multiple hits in the contest as Cody Stone, Tidwell, Rasch and Stockton all registered two hits.

Arkansas State reliever Chandler Hawkins earned the win after allowing two hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
