Coppola Wins Warhawk Male of the Week; Brown, Stanciu Split Female Honors

Tennis

MONROE, La. – A big week for ULM athletics resulted in a lot of wins and high scores as junior Nick Coppola from the ULM men's basketball program earned Warhawk Male of the Week, and junior Adriunna Brown from track & field and freshman Luana Stanciu from tennis were named Co-Warhawk Female of the Week winners, announced Tuesday.

Coppola notched the game-winner for the Warhawks on Saturday in a 91-90 shootout over Appalachian State. The Warhawks trailed by one when Coppola found a seam on the right side and was able to lay-in the go-ahead bucket with 9.6 seconds remaining.

It capped a huge day for the Richmond, Va., product as he registered a team-high 25 points, one shy of his career-high. He went 9-13 from the field, made five free throws and also dished out four assists. Coppola has scored at least 25 points in two of his last three games.

Additionally, Coppola moved up to No. 4 all-time in ULM history in career assists with 343. He needs 22 more to catch Bob Carson and move up to third. Coppola also ranks first in career minutes per game (35.4 mpg), fifth in total minutes (3,118), sixth in career starts (88) and 11th in three-pointers made (120).

It marked the second career Warhawk of the Week award for Coppola after previously winning on March 17, 2015.

On the track, Brown notched her second consecutive first-place finish in the long jump on Sunday. The Macon, Ga., product registered a season-best jump of 5.74m to beat 26 other women at the South Alabama Invitational. It topped her first-place leap of 5.67m set last weekend at the KMS Invitational.

Her day wasn't done there as she also tallied a personal-record in the triple jump with a mark of 11.69m. It placed her in the top-five and broke her previous best of 11.47m set last year at the SBC Indoor Championships.

It marked the third career Warhawk of the Week accolade for Brown after winning last year on Feb. 24, 2015 and April 7, 2015.

On the court, Stanciu won all three of her singles matches this past week in her first collegiate action. The freshman began with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Isla Bock (Nicholls State) on Monday and followed with a 6-3, 7-6 victory against McNeese State's Charoline Erlandsson.

The Focsani, Romania, native capped off an impressive week with a win over Marli Van Heerden, the No. 114 player in the country, in Sunday's deciding set. It was a back-and-forth affair, but Stanciu stayed strong and pulled out a 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 victory against her Central Arkansas foe.

Stanciu has also teamed up with freshman Tiffany Mylonas for a team-best 2-1 doubles record. Stanciu combined to go 5-1 in the week between singles and doubles.

It marked the second-time a Co-Warhawk of the Week honor has ever been distributed and the first on the female side. The award began at the start of the 2013-14 year.
