MONROE, La. – The ULM soccer team fell in its Sun Belt home opener to Georgia State by a final score of 1-0 on Friday, Sept. 22.
Â
In the middle of the second half, GSU (3-6-1) freshmen forward Kayla Ruiz cashed in on a rebound opportunity in the 76th minute, which gave her team the advantage and eventually the win.
Â
The goal forced ULM (0-10-1) to press for the rest of the game and while the team did generate late chances, the players were unable to capitalize.
Â
"We have to be more clinical on shots," ULM head coach
Keyton Wheelock said. "I thought we had some really good build ups through our midfield, but one mistake will cost you."
Â
Junior goalkeeper
Brooke-Lynn Scroggins kept her team in the match by making four key saves in the first half.
Â
While defense had its impact, ULM's offense was not vacant either as the team recorded eight shots in the match.
Â
"We have to work on getting the ball on frame," Wheelock said. "We're going to look at a couple different formations for Sunday's match, but we will continue to work hard for 90 minutes."
Â
Senior midfielder
Danielle Sabathe led the team with three total shots, while ULM and GSU both recorded five corner kicks on the afternoon.
Â
The Warhawks will now look to bounce back at home against Coastal Carolina (6-3-0) on Sunday, Sept. 24. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
