LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The ULM volleyball team could not combat Little Rock's multiple scoring rallies in Friday night's loss to the Trojans. The Warhawks fell 3-0 on the road in the defeat.
"We didnt bring it tonight. We had spurts of fight but couldn't get a rhythm going," said first year head coach
Russ Friedland. "Little Rock came in and outworked us and we need to be better when we step on the court."
The Warhawks would hold a 4-2 lead in set one after a service error by the Trojans, but after Little Rock recorded three-straight points to take a 5-4 lead, ULM would be unable to recover. LR tallied six insurance points, taking a 20-9 lead mid-way through the match to seal their 25-18 victory.
The Trojans jumped out to an early lead in set two, ahead of the Warhawks 20-10. Five of ULM's last six points up until that point were earned from forcing Little Rock miscues. ULM would score four more, including a kill by freshman
Kate Blasingame in falling to the Trojans in set two, 25-14.
Seven of ULM's first nine points were kills, with contributions from sophomore
Lauren Appleman, junior
Mikaela Worley, and redshirt-junior
Catherine Griffith.
The Trojans would spark a seven-point run against the Warhawks to give them a 15-9 lead and despite the best efforts of the ULM defense, Little Rock would go only to claim the sweep with a 25-16 set three win.
"I know this team can play well and believe that we have what it takes to compete in this league," said Friedland. "We've seen it this year already. They just have to gain the belief in their heads that they battle with anyone in the league and bring that fire from the first whistle."
Senior
Sarah Woods led the Warhawks with seven kills, while Appleman, Griffith, Worley, and Blasingame each added four of their own.
ULM falls to 7-13 overall and 0-6 in Sun Belt play, they will continue to hunt for conference win number one, tomorrow (Oct. 13) in Jonesboro, Ark. against Arkansas State.
