Late-Game Pitching Woes Doom Warhawks in Extra-Inning Loss to Mountaineers

BOONE, N.C. – The ULM Warhawk pitching staff struggled today (Mar.11) as they fell to Appalachian State, 8-9 in extra innings. Warhawks drop the weekend series to the Mountaineers 2-1.

The Mountaineers rallied up 14 hits in the loss, including five multi-base hit against the Warhawk pitching staff, taking a seventh-inning lead and eventually the win from ULM.

ULM (11-9, 1-2) would be the first to score in game three, sparking the bats in the third inning when Ana Hogan hit her fourth home run of the season to score four Warhawks and give her team a 6-0 lead in the top of the third.

Junior Sydney McKay and senior Hunter Hogan were consistent at the plate for the ULM, as they usually are, and each earned an RBI single while loading the bases for A.Hogan.

Appalachian State (12-11, 2-1) would answer the Warhawks with five runs of its own, the first of which came off the bat of Alisha Josey, the main Mountaineer behind Appalachian State's hitting-spree.

Josey added a solo-home run in the fifth and seventh innings, as App. State clawed away at ULM's lead. Josey finished the weekend 5-10 with nine RBI, two of her five series-hits were home runs in today's contest.

Hunter and Ana Hogan started the sixth inning for the Warhawks with a double and single respectively. Lyon would call on Victoria Pederson to pinch run for A.Hogan, and on the next pitch Pederson stole second- giving H.Hogan the opportunity to steal home and give ULM a 7-5 lead.

Junior Megan Shaw put the ball in play, and though she grounded out on the play, her hit allowed Pederson to score and the Warhawks would have a three-run lead headed into the bottom of the sixth.

The seventh inning would cause strife for ULM; Josey earned her second home run of the game, but the Warhawks still held onto a two-run lead and with two outs, victory was in sight.

Unfortunately, ULM found themselves blinded and the Mountaineers put two hits down on two outs, including a two-run, game-tying home run by Appalachian State's Baylee Morton.

The Warhawks went three-up, three-down in the eighth inning and all the Mountaineers needed was one run to claim the win.

ULM made the switch from Paige Murray to sophomore Jesse Watts in the circle, but Watts was unable to hold the mound down as the scoring run would reach on a hit-by-pitch, advance to third on a Warhawk error, and scored on an RBI single.

The Warhawks walked away with eight runs on eight hits, and committed three miscues in the process.

ULM will return home to Monroe to host Troy next Saturday and Sunday (Mar.17-18), in its second Sun Belt weekend series.
