MOBILE, Ala. – After falling 6-1 in game one, the ULM softball team pulled out two huge innings in game two, in order to defeat South Alabama 13-1. The Warhawks and Jaguars split the double-header with one win apiece and are scheduled to meet for game three on Sunday (Apr.15) at 1 p.m.
Sophomore
Jessie Watts took the loss in game one, as USA's Hannah Smith put two over the wall for three of South Alabama's six runs.
ULM's lone run in the first inning came not off the bat of a Warhawk, but out of the glove of a Jaguar; senior
Cheyanne Lyon caught a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded that allowed lead-off hitter
Sydney McKay to score.
The Warhawks totaled only four hits in game one, outhit by the Jaguars by five. Senior
Rochelle Roberts finished 2-for-3 at the plate, but was left on base both times.
Roberts continued her success in game two, with a 3-for-5 performance that allowed her to score twice and earn one RBI.
ULM opened up the contest in similar fashion to game one, with a hit by pitch for
Cheyanne Lyon with the bases full of Warhawks. Sophomore
Jayden Mount would score on the play after reaching on a single earlier that inning.
Hunter Hogan would be the second to score, off another hit by pitch call, this time-
Brie Wrobel.
The Warhawks posted six more runs in the top of the second inning to take an 8-1 lead over the Jaguars, putting them in good position for the remainder of the game.
An error by South Alabama's defense and a bunt single by Roberts allowed
Jaclyn Kresta and
Sydney McKay respectively.
South Alabama would make a pitching change, but ULM adapted accordingly and in comes
Ana Hogan. Hogan was able to but the ball in play long enough for both
Hunter Hogan and Roberts to score.
With Wrobel now on third base, Jaguar pitcher Megan Dudenhefer let a wild pitch fly, giving Wrobel to break for home and eventually score after a throwing error back from the catcher.
ULM would take their 8-1 lead into the top of the seventh inning, but made sure to put the lead well out of South Alabama's reach with five additional insurance runs.
Wrobel would take the first pitch out to center field, scoring both Roberts and Mount on the play. Mount reached on a lead-off walk, while Roberts laid down another successful bunt single.
In to pinch run for Wrobel is
Victoria Pederson, who successfully stole second during
Megan Shaw's at-bat. Shaw would double down the left-field line and score Pederson as well as
Ana Hogan on the hit.
USA would make one last pitching change, from Dudenhefer to Bailey Murphy, who would give up ULM's last score on a wild pitch, giving Shaw the opportunity to score.
Senior
Paige Murray walked away with her 12
th win of the season, giving up only five hits to the Warhawks' 13.
ULM will take advantage of a day of rest tomorrow, due to the incoming inclement weather, and resume play for game three in Mobile on Sunday (Apr.15) at 1 p.m.
