MONROE, La. - The Warhawks dropped their sixth straight on Wednesday (April 25) night, after letting go of two mid-game leads to the Lamar Cardinals.
ULM and Lamar started out on similar pages, each post a run in the first and fourth innings.
Headed into the fifth inning, junior
Brie Wrobel and
Ana Hogan were the only two Warhawks with RBI hits in the contest.
That would all change as
Sydney McKay singled through the right side to score
Jayden Mount in the fifth inning, Mount led off the fifth with a huge triple down the right field line.
Once again,
Ana Hogan stepped up to the plate and connected on a singled to left-field, making her way to third on a Cardinal miscue. Hogan's hit would score both
Victoria Pederson and
Cheyanne Lyon- giving ULM a 5-2 lead.
ULM looked to push their lead even further ahead in the sixth inning, and did so with the help of McKay and Wrobel.
McKay, who finished game one 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI, and two stolen bases, scored Roberts who singled up the middle on the second play of the inning.
Wrobel followed with a single to center field that would give McKay enough time to score. The Warhawks had built a five-run lead after six innings and were only three outs from the win.
Unfortunately, ULM's defense took a beating in the top of the seventh, as Lamar laid down five runs, on six hits, tying the ball-game and sending the squads into extra innings.
Senior
Paige Murray, would enter for the Hawks in the middle of the seventh inning and end up with the loss after Lamar added four more runs in the top of the eighth, taking the 11-7 win from ULM in game one.
ULM managed 16 hits in the game, but was doomed with three errors in the first inning alone, finishing with five errors by the end of the double-header.
Game two was off to a better start for the Warhawks, leading 2-0 headed into the sixth inning.
Senior
Rochelle Roberts earned the first RBI of game two, with a ground out in the first inning that would score McKay who reached on a lead-off walk.
Cheyenne Lyon helped ULM earn its second run in the fourth inning, scoring Roberts on a sacrifice fly to left-field. Roberts reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning.
After staying scoreless for five straight innings, Lamar bounced back in the sixth inning to score on a single that, when combined with a Warhawk mishap- allowed a base-runner to score from first base.
An RBI double down the left field line by LU's designated player would tie the game, 2-2 in the top of the sixth.
Neither team would score in the seventh, but Lamar would be the first to score in the eighth, after loading the bases on back-to-back fielder's choice plays.
A sacrifice fly helped the Cardinals score one, giving them a 3-2 lead and ultimately the win, after ULM failed to answer with any of its own in the bottom of the inning.
ULM falls to 23-23 on the season, and will resume Sun Belt Conference play on Saturday (April 28) when they host Georgia State in a double-header with a first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
