MONROE, La. – Eight straight is not something the ULM softball team would be saying at this point in the season, as they dropped the Sun Belt series today (April 28) to Georgia State in the Saturday double-header.
ULM is consistently out performing their opponents at the plate, even in contests in which their offensive efforts fall short.
"We hit the ball well today and for the most part, made smart choice at the plate," said head softball coach
Corey Lyon. "Unfortunately, we couldn't manage a hit when we needed it most."
ULM jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a strong three-run second inning, sparked by a two-run RBI single to center field off the bat of sophomore
Jayden Mount. Mount's hit scored
Ana Hogan and
Jaclyn Kresta who each put a ball in play to reach earlier in the inning. Mount would score only two batters later, thanks to the consistent skills of senior
Rochelle Roberts who's single to center-field gave Mount the opportunity to cross the plate.
Ana Hogan earned an RBI of her own in the bottom of the third, with a single down the left-field line, scoring senior
Cheyanne Lyon, who reached on a Panther error to lead off the inning.
The Warhawks lost a mid-game lead for the third contest in-a-row after leading 4-0 headed into the fifth inning, giving up two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to the Panthers. Georgia State managed a single run in the top of the seventh inning to take game one, 5-4.
Game two proved to be an even tougher struggle for the Hawks, being forced to play seven innings of catch-up with the Panthers.
ULM was already trailing by three runs when they earned their first runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior
Brie Wrobel executed the perfect sacrifice fly, ringing in
Ana Hogan from third base.
With
Ava Heidorn in to pinch run for the Hawks, Mount stepped up again and connected on a hard hit ball to the Panther shortstop, reaching first and scoring Heidorn.
GSU answered with two more runs in the top of the fifth inning, and another in the sixth, taking a 6-2 lead over the Warhawks.
Bottom of the sixth inning, following Mount's single to right-field, Roberts doubles to left-center, not only moving Mount to third, but also leaving a mark on ULM softball history. Roberts' double was her 243
rd career hit, breaking the all-time career hits record in program history.
Sydney McKay followed Roberts hit reaching on an error by the left-fielder for GSU, giving Mount the chance to score ULM's final run as they fell 6-3 in game two.
Senior
Paige Murray was booked with both losses today, dropping her below the .500 win mark on the season (12-13).
The Warhawks will pick back up on Sunday (April 29) at 12 p.m. with senior celebrations to be held approximately 20 minutes prior to the first pitch.
