Warhawks Drop Match at Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. - The ULM Warhawks finished up road trip with a 2-1 loss to Georgia Southern at Eagle Field-Erk Park, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.

"We played in some tough conditions today and continued to battle all the way until the end," head coach Keyton Wheelock said.

ULM (3-11-2, 0-8 Sun Belt) got off to a slow start, but Victoria Altieri created the Warhawks' first opportunity of the afternoon at the five minute mark with a shot, but it was saved. Minutes later, Alexiss Trudeau took a shot, but hers went wide left.

"Lexi was very solid in the middle today," Wheelock said.

Taylor Altieri bounced back at the 22 minute mark with a shot, but her shot was high. Frida Brattum  answered for Georgia Southern (6-8-1, 3-4-1 Sun Belt) with a goal at the 26 minute mark to put the Eagles up, 1-0.

Camryn Ciaramella turned around with a shot for ULM that was saved and the Warhawks didn't create another opportunity during the half. Georgia Southern went into halftime leading, 1-0.

Amanda Castillo and Cassidy Wiest came out quickly for ULM in the second half with shots, but they were both saved by Lauren Karinshak. 69 minutes into the game, McKenzie Rizqi raced down the field and found the back of the net to tie the match at one. Rizqi's goal ended a four-match scoreless drought for the Warhawks.

"McKenzie got her first collegiate goal today, which doubled our goal count from last year," Wheelock said.

Rizqi had another opportunity 10 minutes later, but her next shot was saved. Karin Winka ran down the pitch with five minutes left in the game to score the Eagles' second goal of the afternoon.

Ciaramella attempted to keep ULM in the game at the 87 minute mark with a shot, but it was saved again. Neither team would have another opportunity and Georgia Southern won the match, 2-1.

"We're happy that we are done with road games and hope that everybody comes out to celebrate our seniors next weekend," Wheelock said.

The Warhawks will return home to Brown Stadium and host senior weekend. First up is a 7 p.m. matchup on Friday against Georgia State.
