Warhawks Downed by Georgia State, 2-0

MONROE, La. - The ULM women's soccer team battled through steady rain and soggy field conditions against Georgia State Friday night, but fell to the Panthers, 2-0.

"We both had to play in tough conditions tonight," ULM head coach Keyton Wheelock said. "They came out ready and we didn't."

Georgia State (7-8-2, 4-4-1 Sun Belt) wasted no time to start the game. Brooke Shank scored on a header from point-blank range for the Panthers in the first two minutes to put Georgia State up, 1-0. Jimena Cabrero set up the game's first goal by chasing down a long pass before it crossed the end line and delivering a nifty feed to Shank.

"They came out firing," Wheelock said. "We weren't focused, and we weren't ready."

Taylor Altieri answered for ULM (3-12-2, 0-9 Sun Belt) at the four-minute mark with a shot, but it was saved. Camryn Ciaramella and Amanda Castillo both took shots later in the half, but both balls went wide left.

Liz Fogarty widened the Panthers' lead at the 28-minute mark with a header off a corner kick from Cabrero to put Georgia State up, 2-0. Castillo took another shot as the first half was ending, but her shot again went wide left. The Panthers went into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

"You take out those first two goals and we were right there with them," Wheelock said. "We played great in the second half, but we have to play 90 minutes."

Both teams had trouble finding their footing in the second half, but Ciaramella attempted a shot four minutes into the half that went wide right. Victoria Altieri created an opportunity at the 80-minute mark, but that shot went wide right as well. Georgia State held on for a 2-0 win.

"We have an opportunity to close out the season with a win," Wheelock said. "If we come out and play a full 90 minutes, we have a shot."

The Warhawks will play their final home game of the season in Brown Stadium Sunday by playing host to Coastal Carolina for Senior Day at 1 p.m.
