ULM Falls to Arkansas State in 5-Set Heartbreaker

MONROE, La. - The ULM Warhawks won a set over Arkansas State for the first time since 2012, but couldn't overcome the Red Wolves and lost in five sets, 3-2.

"We gave Arkansas State an opportunity," head coach Charlie Olson said. "When we strayed away from our game plan, we let them in the match."

A kill by Ina Gosen started ULM (10-14, 1-8 Sun Belt) out of the right track. Both teams traded points back and forth before a kill by Alix Christie gave the Warhawks a slight lead over Arkansas State (13-7, 4-4 Sun Belt).

The Red Wolves held tight and overtook ULM by two points. A kill by Lauren Appelman tied the set up at 23. Another kill by Appelman and an attack error by Timber Terrell gave the Warhawks a 27-25 set one win.

"We stuck to our game plan in set one," Olson said. "We were aggressive, we served tough, we were in system and we took care of business."

Gosen nailed another kill to give ULM its first point of set two. However, Arkansas State took control and jumped out to a 12-4 lead. A service ace by Kate Blasingame brought the Warhawks within six, but the Red Wolves never let off the gas and cruised to a 25-14 set two win.

Kills by Gosen and Mikaela Worley gave ULM a two-point lead early in the third set and another kill by Appelman provided the Warhawks with a 9-4 lead. Worley gained another kill to give ULM a 19-12 lead.

Arkansas State went on an 8-1 scoring run to tie the set up at 20 and ULM could never recover, with the Red Wolves earning a 25-23 set three win.

Blasingame gave the Warhawks their first point of set four with a kill before Arkansas State jumped out to a 10-3 lead. A kill by Worley set ULM back on track and a kill by Appelman brought the Warhawks within four.

The Red Wolves started to pull away, but ULM bounced back and a kill by Christie tied the set up at 21. The Warhawks never looked back and won set four, 25-23.

"I told them they had worked way too hard to give this set up," Olson said. "We stuck to the basics and trusted in the game plan."

Worley nailed another kill to give ULM a one-point lead in the fifth set, before Arkansas State took control and pulled away. The Red Wolves won set five, 15-8.

"We'll take advantage of the little wins today," Olson said. "Even though we came out with a loss, we're playing really good volleyball right now."

The Warhawks remain at home for a 6 p.m. matchup on Saturday against Little Rock.
