Five Warhawks Have Multiple Hits in Clash with UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Five ULM hitters finished with multiple hits, including Sydney McKay and Jessie Watts who recorded three each, in the Warhawks 12-11 setback to UAB in the UAB Blazer Bash on Sunday afternoon.

McKay wrapped up the day by notching two doubles in a 3-for-5 outing that resulted in two runs and an RBI. Watts closed the tournament by going 3-for-5 with three RBI and scoring one run against the host Blazers. The remaining three hitters with multiple hits for ULM, which dropped to 1-4 on the season, were Brie Wrobel (2-3, 2 RBI), Korie Kreps (2-4, 2 runs) and Victoria Pederson (2-4, 2 runs).

Adrianna Chavarria (1-1) surrendered six runs on five hits in one inning of work on the mound. She was followed by Karly Taranto, who allowed five runs, four hits and one walk to the six UAB batters she faced. Watts also took the mound for ULM, logging 4 2/3 innings where she gave up two hits, one run and two walks in the contest.

The Blazers (3-2) grabbed the lead early in the home half of the first, taking advantage of three ULM errors along with a triple and a double to score four runs on four hits.

UAB doubled that output in the bottom of the second inning, collecting two doubles in the first three batters that stretched the lead to 5-0. With runners on the corners, the Blazers put their sixth run across on a grounder to second. Sarah Crawford delivered the biggest hit of the inning, a three-run home run over to left-center field, providing UAB with a 9-0 lead. Four doubles among the next five Blazer hitters resulted in three runs as UAB established a 12-run advantage.

The Warhawk bats came alive in the top of the third after a single to left by Pederson was quickly followed by a double down the right field line by McKay. With the bases loaded, following a walk by Nykiah Hines, Jayden Mount lifted a double to left center that scored McKay and Pederson in the process. Watts added a single up the middle for the third ULM run ahead of a single to third by Wrobel that plated Mount.

ULM silenced the Blazers' bats in the bottom of the third while putting together another solid offensive performance in the fourth to pull within three runs. The inning began with back-to-back singles from Kreps and Pederson before a fielding error in McKay's at-bat loaded the bases with no outs. Two batters later, Jayden Mount reached on a fielding error that plated Kreps from third.

Watts came through with the big hit of the fourth for ULM, dropping a double to left field that scored McKay and Pederson, trimming the Blazers' lead to six. Wrobel picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Mount, and Jaclyn Kresta followed with a single through the right side which allowed Ava Heirdorn to cross the plate with the ninth ULM run of the game on the throw.

As the Warhawks defense kept UAB's offense in check, the offense chipped away at the lead. Kreps led off the fifth with a single to left center, scoring two batters later when McKay knocked a double to center field, resulting in a 12-10 deficit. However, McKay was stranded at third as UAB recorded a strikeout and a fly out to left.

A third straight scoreless inning by UAB kept the door open for the Warhawk offense in the sixth. Watts delivered a single through the left side to open the inning and Wrobel followed with a hit to left that put Watts into scoring position. Kresta laid down a sacrifice bunt, advancing both runners, before a sacrifice fly to center field brought home Watts for the 11th Warhawk run.

The Warhawk defense held UAB hitless for a fourth-straight inning in the sixth, giving the offense one final opportunity in the seventh. With one out, McKay gave ULM hope with a single up the middle. Hines reached on a fielding error, moving McKay into second, before a grounder by Watts ended the threat with an out at short.

ULM returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 3 p.m. when the Warhawks travel to Nacogdoches, Texas, to take on Stephen F. Austin.
