ULM Finishes with Five Hits in Shutout Loss to Ladyjacks

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Five Warhawks finished with at least one hit each, but none resulted in a run as the ULM softball team suffered a 4-0 setback to Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday afternoon.

The Warhawks (1-5) offense received hits from Sydney McKay (1-3), Jayden Mount (1-3), Jessie Watts (1-3), Brie Wrobel (1-3) and Jaclyn Kresta (1-2). Meanwhile, Stephen F. Austin (5-1) was led by Margarita Corona (3-3, 3 RBI, run) and Kassidy Wilbur (2-3).

The Ladyjacks were led on the mound by Ashley Kriesel, who picked up her first win of the season after tossing a complete game five-hitter.

Three pitchers took the mound for ULM, including Karly Taranto (0-1), who survived one complete inning in which she surrendered four runs on four hits while striking out two. Jessie Watts followed for the next three innings, allowing one walk and striking out a pair, before giving way to Murphy Williams for the final two innings.

Stephen F. Austin followed up a scoreless first by the Warhawks with back-to-back hits to open up the inning off the bats of Bryana Novegil and Tommi Goodman. Two batters later, Corona sent a full count pitch over the centerfield wall for three-run homer.

The Ladyjacks stretched their lead to 4-0 in the second, again due in large part to back-to-back singles to lead off the frame by Mackenzie Bennett and Wilbur. Emily Wolfe laid down a sacrifice bunt, advancing pinch runner Bailey Richards to third in the process. Novegil reached base on a fielder's choice, scoring Richards from third for the final Stephen F. Austin run.

ULM threatened in the top of the fourth after a leadoff single to left center by Mount was followed by a single to center field by Wrobel two batters later. Jaclyn Kresta loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch, but the scoring threat ended when Korie Krepps popped out to third base.

The Warhawks continue their road stretch on Saturday, Feb. 16 when they head take on Maryland (9 a.m.) and Nevada on the opening day of the Houston Classic.
