McKay, Hines Combine for Six Hits Versus Wright State

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The ULM tandem of Sydney McKay and Nykiah Hines combined for six of the team's 11 hits against Wright State, but the Raiders used a five-run fifth inning to earn a 10-7 victory in the Sunday morning contest between the two teams at the UAB Blazer Bash.

McKay wrapped up the game with a 3-for-3 performance, resulting in four RBI, while Hines was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. Collectively, the Warhawks finished with 11 hits, including a pair of doubles by Korie Kreps and Kennedy Page.

Three pitchers took the mound for ULM, including starter Blaire Wilson, Murphy Williams and Jessie Watts. Wilson faced three batters, surrendered two runs, before giving way to Williams who tossed the next 4 1/3 innings where she scattered five runs on seven hits while striking out two in the loss. Watts came in relief to toss 1 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and fanned two Raider batters.

After drawing three walks to open the bottom of the first, Wright State took advantage of a double to center field by Madison Nunez to put two runs across in the form of Lauren Deitrick and Madison Whitaker.

ULM drew even in the top of the second when Megan Shaw kept the inning alive with a two-out single down the left-field line. Hines followed with a single to left, moving Shaw into scoring position at second, before an error by shortstop allowed Victoria Pederson to load the bases with McKay at the plate. The senior outfielder delivered with a clutch single to right field, scoring Hines and Shaw to make for a 2-2 contest.

The Raiders tacked on their third run in the third as a series of errors put Brianna Hutchinson at second with Madison Hartman at bat. Hartman delivered a two-out single up the middle, scoring Hutchinson for the unearned run.

The Warhawks came through with their second multi-run inning of the game in the fourth, taking advantage of a throwing error at third that allowed Jayden Mount to reach base. Hines followed with a single, moving to second on the throw, as ULM put two runners in scoring position with one out. Two batters later, McKay again came through for the Warhawks with a two-run single that resulted in the 4-3 lead.

The back-and-forth exchange continued in the bottom of the fourth when Wright State regained the lead with a pair of runs. The Raiders took advantage of a single to left by Meredith Keel and a double off the bat of Whitaker, who managed to score on an errant throw, to move in front 5-4.

Kreps opened the fifth inning with a double up the middle before quickly moving to third on a grounder by Watts. ULM's offense set the table for Jaclyn Kresta with a walk and a hit by pitch, loading the bases for the No. 6 hitter in the lineup. However, it was Shaw that reached on a two-out error that scored Kreps for the fifth ULM run of the game.

Wright State broke the game open in the bottom half of the fifth, scoring five runs on five hits, to take a 10-5 lead. Three consecutive singles loaded the bases for the Raiders, who brought home Raidyn Johnson for the go-ahead run after a fielding error. Whitaker managed to drop a single into left field, scoring two Raiders in the process for the 8-5 lead. Lauren Deitrick followed with a single to left, scoring Keel, before Whitaker stole home to account for the final Wright State run of the game.

ULM managed two runs in the top of the seventh inning, making for the 10-7 final. Watts opened the frame with a single up the middle and Williams moved pinch runner Ava Heirdorn to second on a fielding error at second. Page sent a double to right-center field, scoring Heirdorn, as the Warhawks trimmed the lead to four. Two batters later, Hines sent a single down the left field line, scoring Williams from third for the final run of the game.
