Gophers Limit ULM Offense in 5-0 Win

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Minnesota hurler Sydney Smith picked up her first win of the season after limiting the ULM offense to three hits in a 5-0 victory in softball action at the Easton Bama Bash on Friday morning (Feb. 22).

Smith went the distance in the shutout victory while striking out five Warhawk hitters along the way. Among the three ULM (1-10) players with at least one hit were Bailey Thibodeaux (1-2), Jaclyn Kresta (1-2) and Korie Kreps (1-2).

Minnesota (5-3) countered with eight team hits, including a pair from Emma Barns, who finished 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBI and a pair of home runs.

With two outs in the bottom of the second, the Golden Gophers extended the inning when Ali Linder reached base on an error. Makenna Partain followed with a bases clearing triple that plated Linder and Carlie Brandt, who reached on a walk, for the early 2-0 lead.

Two innings later, Minnesota again scored, this time on Burns' home run over the left-center field wall. The 3-0 margin would remain until the fifth, when a double to right field by Katelyn Kemetmueller was followed by a single through the left side of the infield by Natalie DenHartog, resulting in a 4-0 Gopher lead.

Barns struck again in the bottom of the sixth, smacking a solo home run to left-center field, as Minnesota scored its final run of the game.

Jessie Watts (0-2) suffered the loss for the Warhawks, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits along with three walks. She fanned three Minnesota batters and recorded 122 pitches in the game.
