McNeese State Triumphs Over Warhawks in Five Innings, 9-0

LAKE CHARLES, La. – A pair of four-run innings by the McNeese State softball team allowed the Cowgirls to earn a five-inning 9-0 victory over visiting ULM on Tuesday, Feb. 26.
 
The McNeese State (7-9) offense posted four runs apiece in the second and fourth innings and tallied 11 hits on the night. Four Cowgirl hitters enjoyed multi-hit performances including Justyce McClain (2-3, 2 RBI, run), Alayis Seneca (2-3, RBI, 2 runs), Alexandria Saldivar (2-3, RBI, run) and Brenique Wright (2-3, 2 RBI, run, double).
 
ULM (1-15) recorded four hits as a team, highlighted by Sydney McKay (2-3), Jessie Watts (1-3) and Megan Shaw (1-2, double).
 
McNeese State grabbed the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a single to left field by Seneca that brought home McClain from second.
 
The Cowgirls' lead reached 2-0 in the second inning following a double up the middle by Wright, plating Aubree Turbeville, who had also reached on a double. Two batters later, Sara Geier sent a single into center field, scoring Wright from third on the play.
 
With the combination of Seneca and Geier on first and second, Cori McCray delivered a one-out double to right-center field as McNeese State established a 5-0 advantage.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, Alexandria Saldivar laid down a squeeze bunt single that scored Seneca for McNeese State's sixth run of the game. Turbeville kept the inning alive by reaching on a fielder's choice, scoring Cori McCrary in the process.
 
With the bases loaded with Cowgirls, Wright tacked on the eighth run of the game on a single through the right side that plated Kaylee Lopez. The final run of the game crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly to right field that brought Saldivar home from third.
 
Amber Coons (2-0) grabbed the win for McNeese State, scattering three hits over four scoreless innings with one walk and six strikeouts.

ULM will now turn its attention to the Adam Brown Memorial Shamrock Classic, hosted by Central Arkansas, Feb. 28-March 2. The Warhawks are set to face Missouri State (Feb. 28 at 6 p.m.), Southeast Missouri State (March 1 at 11:15 a.m.), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (March 2 at 3:45 p.m.) and Coppin State (March 2 at 6 p.m.) in Conway, Arkansas.
