McKay, Thibodeaux Collect Hits; ULM Falls to Austin Peay in Season Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Austin Peay's Morgan Rackel put together a solid pitching performance that limited the ULM offense to a pair of hits by Sydney McKay and Bailey Thibodeaux as the Governors earned a 10-0 victory in the softball opener for both programs at the UAB Blazer Bash on Friday afternoon.

McKay and Thibodeaux each finished 1-for-2 from the plate, both singles, while the Warhawks (0-1) sent three pitchers to the mound. Starter Murphy Williams (0-1) tossed 1 2/3 innings, allowed four runs, three walks and two hits to the 11 batters she faced. Williams was followed by Karly Taranto (0-1), who allowed six earned runs, four walks and two hits in the next two innings, before Jessie Watts came on to record the final out.

Austin Peay (1-0) took advantage of Rackel's performance, which limited the Warhawk bats to two hits over five innings. Rackel faced 17 ULM hitters and recorded 10 strikeouts on the afternoon.

Offensively, the Governors capitalized on the bats of Kacy Acree (2-2, 4 RBI, 2 runs) and Carly Mattson (2-3, 4 RBI). Austin Peay recorded five hits as a team, with the other hit coming off the bat of Danielle Liermann, who went 1-for-2 with an RBI and scored two runs in the game.

The Governors put the first two runs of the game on the board in the bottom of the first when fielding error by Jayden Mount allowed Bailey Shorter to score from third. Mattson followed with a single up the middle, scoring Liermann from third to provide the 2-0 advantage.

After a three-up, three-down inning by the Warhawks, Austin Peay tacked on two more runs in the second. The ULM defense collected two outs in the first three hitters of the frame, but Acree lifted an 0-1 pitch over the right field wall for the 4-0 Governors' lead.

The big run-producing inning for the Governors came in the fourth, when they put six runs across the plate for the 10-0 lead. With one out and the bases loaded, following back-to-back walks, Acree sent a bases-clearing double to right field for the 6-0 Austin Peay lead. Acree moved to third on a grounder, scoring on the next at-bat when Liermann knocked a single to right field.

Consecutive walks loaded the bases for Mattson, who delivered a double that scored Rackel and Lexi Osowski in the process to establish the 10-0 advantage.

ULM returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 10 a.m. to face Wright State in the second game of the tournament. The Warhawks have a rematch against Austin Peay at 12:30 p.m.
