Watts Records Four RBI Versus Wright State

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – ULM junior Jessie Watts drove in a game-high four RBI, but it was a two-run double to left field in the seventh by Macy McCall that lifted Wright State to an 8-7 victory in the second game of the UAB Blazer Bash on Saturday, Feb. 9.

Watts was one of four Warhawks to collect an RBI in the contest, along with Sydney McKay (2-4, 2 runs), Jayden Mount (0-1) and Victoria Pederson (1-3, run). Watts also made her presence felt on the mound, allowing four runs (two earned) and six hits over four innings.

The Warhawks biggest inning of the day came in the seventh when McKay led off the frame by reaching second on a throwing error by Wright State hurler Lexie Hilling. Korie Kreps singled to center, putting runners on the corners, before a liner back to the pitcher by Rylee Lara loaded the bases. Watts slapped a double to center field, which cleared the bases and provided ULM with a 7-6 advantage.

The heart of the Raiders' order came through in the bottom of the seventh, beginning when Brianna Hutchinson drew a lead-off walk. Madison Nunez reached on a fielding error, sending pinch runner Raidyn Johnson to second in the process. A fielding error at third allowed Wright State to load the bases for McCall. The freshman centerfielder delivered a clutch single to left, scoring Mills from third and Nunez from second for the game-winning run.

ULM bolted out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with back-to-back hits by McKay and Kreps to lead off the game. With the pair in scoring position, following a series of steals, Mount flied to center field to plate McKay for the first run. Watts sent a grounder to second, scoring Kreps on the play, to give the Warhawks the lead.

Wright State countered with three runs in the home half of the second to take a one-run lead. Nunez delivered a two-out double to right center, scoring Lauren Deitrick for the Raiders' first run. A wild pitch allowed Brianna Hutchinson to score from third, knotting the game at 2-2. Madison Mills put the go-ahead run across the plate when she doubled to right center, scoring Nunez from third.

Pederson manufactured the lone Warhawk run of the second when she kept the inning alive with a two-out double down the left field line. McKay answered with her second hit, a single to left, which allowed Pederson to score on the throw for the third run.

The Raiders lead-off hitter Meredith Keel roped a two-out single up the middle in the second to extend the inning. Madison Whitaker reached on an error at second, moving Keel into scoring position. Deitrick came through with a double into left field, scoring Keel for the unearned run.

Wright State enjoyed its second multi-run inning in the third with Watts on the mound for the Warhawks. Mills got the Raiders' offense started with a double to center, and two batters later, Madison Hartman followed with a double through the right side of the infield, resulting in a 5-3 lead. Jordyn Poulson reached on an error at short, putting runners at the corners with Keel at the plate. Poulson then swiped second base and Hartman scored on the throw to extend the Wright State lead to three runs at 6-3.

ULM got one run back in the fourth when Ana Hogan opened with a double to right field. Two batters later, with Hogan at third, Pederson reached on a fielder's choice and Hogan scored on the throw.
