Warhawks Avenge Setback to Austin Peay; Down Governors, 5-3

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Less than one day after suffering a 10-0 setback to Austin Peay, the ULM softball team avenged its loss with a 5-3 victory over the Governors (3-1) in the second meeting of the schools at the UAB Blazer Bash on Saturday afternoon.

The Warhawks (1-2) capitalized on the performances of Jessie Watts and Kennedy Page to earn their first victory under first-year head coach Molly Fichtner. Both hitters finished 1-for-3 from the plate, recorded two RBI and scored a run in the process.

Adrianna Chavarria (1-0) picked up the complete game victory for the Warhawks after limiting Austin Peay to three runs on four hits and striking out four Governor hitters in 118 pitches.

The Governors grabbed the early lead in the second inning, taking advantage of a lead-off walk by Emily Moore. Moore moved to second on a bunt single, before advancing to third on a wild pitch. The junior second baseman crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Kacy Acree, providing the 1-0 lead.

Retaliation from the Warhawks came swiftly in the home half of the second, when Jessica Williams kept the inning alive by drawing a two-out walk. Page, the No. 8 hitter in the ULM lineup, followed with a home run over the center field wall on the first pitch she saw to forge the Warhawks in front 2-1.

Both lineups remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when ULM again scored multiple runs. Victoria Pederson reached base on a walk and advanced to third on a stolen base and throwing error by the catcher with Sydney McKay at the plate. McKay reached on a fielder's choice as Pederson trotted home from third on a throwing error by the catcher.

Two batters later, Watts lifted a two-run homer to right-center field as McKay scored from second and the ULM lead ballooned to 5-1.

Austin Peay managed two runs in the top of the sixth, following a single up the middle by Brooke Pfefferle that plated Moore and pinch runner Katie Keen, but ULM's defense recorded four straight outs to complete the win.

The Warhawks conclude the UAB Blazer Bash on Sunday, Feb. 10 when they face Wright State at 9 a.m. and the host Blazers at 11:30 a.m.
