Southeast Missouri Limits ULM Offense to Two Hits

CONWAY, Ark.— Southeast Missouri State limited the ULM offense to two hits over six innings, while scoring eight runs over six innings in the Warhawks' second game of the Adam Brown Memorial Classic, hosted by Central Arkansas, on Friday, March 1.

The Redhawks (10-6) grabbed an early lead in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs on two hits. Rachel Anderson followed a leadoff walk and stolen base by Sarah Messex with a single to first for the game's first run. Teammate Ashley Ellis knocked a double into right-center field, advancing to third on the throw, as she brought Anderson home from second. The final run of the frame came on a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Ellis from third, for the 3-0 SEMO lead.

With a 3-0 advantage entering the third, the Redhawks put two more runs on the board via a pair of ULM miscues. Messex reached on an error and advanced on a fly out to left field. An error in right field allowed Anderson to reach base and score, along with Messex, resulting in a 5-0 SEMO lead.

The final three runs of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Anna Griffin doubled to center field to start the frame and Chelsy Pena singled past the shortstop to put runners at first and second. Kaylee Anderson reached base on a fielder's choice, which got pinch runner Mackenzie Long out at third, again putting Redhawks' runners at first and second. Messex followed with a three-run blast over the left-center field wall, making for the 8-0 final.

ULM (1-17) had two hits on the afternoon, which came off the bats of Jaclyn Kresta (1-3) and Jayden Mount (1-2). Two Redhawks managed multiple hits, including Pena (2-3, run) and Anderson (2-3, 2 runs, RBI). Messex was the top RBI producer, finishing 1-for-3 from the plate with three RBI and a run scored.

Rachel Rook (2-1) earned the victory for SEMO, limiting ULM to two hits and one walk over five innings, while striking out nine of the 17 batters she faced. Jessie Watts (0-3) suffered the setback for the Warhawks after allowing eight runs (six earned) on eight hits in 5.2 innings.

ULM will return to the field on Saturday, March 2, to conclude the UCA Tournament with a pair of games against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (3:45 p.m.) and Coppin State (6 p.m.).
