ULM Softball Drops Home Opener to App State, 3-0

MONROE, La – ULM pounded out five hits, taking advantage of two off the bat of Sydney McKay, but it was two-run double by Appalachian State's Jenny Dodd that proved to be the difference as the Mountaineers claimed a 3-0 win in the Warhawks' home opener on Friday, March 15.
 
A scoreless contest until the fifth, Appalachian State (15-7, 4-0 Sun Belt) drew a leadoff walk by Baylee Morton to open the frame. Two batters later, with Laura Sales pinch running for Morton, Keri White put two runners on base with a bunt single. Dodd followed with a two-out bases-clearing double to left center, providing the Mountaineers with a 2-0 advantage.
 
ULM (4-20, 1-3) answered with two hits in the bottom of the fifth, putting Victoria Pederson at second in the process, but remained scoreless.
 
The Mountaineers tacked on their third run of the game in the sixth, again taking advantage of a leadoff walk, this time by Sidney Russell. Two batters later, with Russell at second following a wild pitch, Morton drove a single into right field that scored Russell on an error to extend the lead to 3-0.
 
The Warhawks did not manage a hit over the final two innings of the game.
 
Kenzie Longanecker (9-0) recorded a complete-game shutout, allowing five hits over 7.0 innings, with three walks and two strikeouts.
 
While McKay led the way for the Warhawk lineup with a 2-for-4 performance, Jessie Watts (1-2), Megan Shaw (1-3) and Pederson (1-2) also finished with a hit each.
 
Adrianna Chavarria (1-5) took the loss for the Warhawks after surrendering three runs (two earned) on five hits over 5.2 innings while walking five and striking out three App State hitters along the way.
 
The two teams return to the ULM Softball Complex for Game 2 of the Sun Belt series on Saturday, March 16 at 2 p.m.
