ULM Softball Falls in Extra Innings to App State, 4-2

MONROE, La. – Sun Belt Conference rival Appalachian State tallied two runs in the top of the eighth inning to emerge with a 4-2 win over ULM on Saturday, March 16.
 
With the score knotted at 2-2 in the top of the eighth, App State (16-7, 5-0 SBC) pinch hitter Alison Durrence drew a leadoff walk before being replaced on the base pads by Caylie Kifer. After Jenny Dodd also walked, Haley Stewart reach on a field's choice, advancing Kifer to third. Pinch runner Laura Sales stole second before a walk to Sidney Russell loaded the bases. With a full count, Mary Pierce Barnes followed with a two-run single to center field, scoring Sales and Kifer to give the Mountaineers a 4-2 advantage.
 
The Mountaineers scored one run each in the third and fourth innings, building an early 2-0 lead in the process.
 
ULM (4-21, 1-4 SBC) answered with a two-run seventh inning after amassing three hits in the frame.
 
Megan Shaw opened the bottom of the seventh with a walk and moved to second after a single through the right side of the infield by Jaclyn Kresta. With one out, Sydney McKay roped a single up the middle to load the bases. With two outs, Jayden Mount delivered a two-run single to right field, scoring Shaw and pinch runner Victoria Pederson to tie the game at 2-2.
 
Sydney Holland (6-4) earned the win for the Mountaineers after tossing a complete game, six-hitter. Holland allowed two runs, walked four and recorded five strikeouts.
 
Murphy Williams (1-6) took the loss for the Warhawks after surrendering two runs on two hits in 3.1 innings with four walks and one strikeout.
 
Mount led the way for the Warhawk offense after going 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI. The remaining four ULM hits came from the combination of McKay, Jessie Watts, Kresta and Brie Wrobel.
 
The two teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday, March 17 at 11:30 a.m.
