ULM Softball Rolls to 10-2 Win Over Coppin State

CONWAY, Ark. – The ULM softball team scored 10 or more runs in back-to-back games for the first time this season as it earned a 10-2 win in five innings against Coppin State to conclude the Central Arkansas Tournament on Saturday, March 2.

Sydney McKay (4-4, 2 RBI, 2 runs, double) was the only player in the ULM lineup with multiple hits in the game. On the mound, the Warhawks (3-17) were led by the pitching performance of Murphy Williams (1-5), who scattered six hits and two walks over five innings, while striking out five Coppin State batters.

Coppin State snagged a 1-0 lead early in the first inning, scoring on a passed ball. However, ULM retaliated in the bottom of the frame with a single to right-center field by Jessie Watts that scored McKay from first.

The Warhawks moved in front 2-1 in the second as Victoria Pederson reached on a bunt single and stole both second and third base before trotting home on a single up the middle by McKay. Coppin State answered with a run in the top of the third to knot the game at 2-2.

ULM forged its way back in front, putting four runs across in the third, beginning when Brie Wrobel reached on a walk and was pinch run for by Ava Heirdorn. Heirdorn eventually moved to third base before scoring the go-ahead run after a Jaclyn Kresta walk.

Mount continued the third for ULM, drawing a walk of her own before a double steal led to a throwing error by the catcher, plating Kresta in the process. Hogan reached on an error at third, giving ULM a 5-2 advantage with Mount's unearned run. McKay drove a single up the middle, scoring Korie Kreps for the sixth Warhawk run of the game and final run of the third.

A single by Wrobel coupled with a double to right-center field by Kresta put two runners in scoring position for Mount in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mount delivered in the clutch with a double down the left field line to extend the ULM lead to 8-2.

The final two runs for the Warhawks came in the bottom of the fifth when McKay opened with a single. A stolen base by McKay, along with Watts' walk, put two runners on for ULM. Two batters later, Bailey Thibodeaux doubled to left, scoring McKay and the pinch runner Kennedy Page for the final runs of the contest.

ULM remains on the road when the Warhawks head to Troy for a three-game series to open up Sun Belt Conference play on Friday, March 8.
