ULM Softball Opens Sun Belt Play with 8-0 Setback at Troy

TROY, Ala. – Troy used a pair of multi-run innings to its advantage in to earn an 8-0 five-inning victory over ULM in the Sun Belt Conference opener for both teams Friday, March 8.
 
After a scoreless first inning for both teams, the Trojans (17-6, 1-0 Sun Belt) scored five runs in the second and added three more in the fifth to move to 17-7 on the season. ULM (3-18, 0-1) finished the game with one hit, which came off the bat of Sydney McKay, who finished 1-for-2 from the plate.
 
Troy's Stephanie Snyder got the offense going in the second inning with a home run to left field. A walk by Kelly Horne was followed by a single to third base by Hope Hernandez that moved pinch runner Allie Miller to third. Madeline Porter singled through the left side of the infield, scoring Miller from third for a 2-0 Trojan lead.
 
Taylor Corbett drove a two-out single up the middle that plated both Porter and Hernandez for the 4-0 lead. The final run came on a double to center field by Katie Webb, who brought Corbett home for the fifth run.
 
McKay picked up ULM's first hit of the game in the fourth but was stranded at second.
 
The Trojan offense added three more runs in the home half of the fifth after Snyder roped a double to right-center field that moved leadoff hitter Bailey Taylor to third. The first run of the inning crossed the plate on a single to left by Horne, which scored Taylor. Kaylee Hussey followed with a single back to the pitcher, scoring Snyder for the seven-run advantage. The final run came when Porter placed a single through the left side of the infield that brought Horne home from third.
 
Porter (2-4, run) and Corbett (1-2, run) led the way for the Troy offense with two RBI each. Snyder closed out the game with a pair of extra base hits, including a double and a home run. Leanna Johnson (4-1) got the win on the mound, striking out five of the 16 ULM batters she faced.
 
ULM's Karly Taranto (0-4) faced seven batters on the day and took the loss after allowing two runs on one hit with one walk and one strikeout.
