ULM Rally Falls Short; Drops Series Opener to Texas State, 2-1

MONROE, La.Bailey Thibodeaux and Victoria Pederson finished with two hits each for ULM, but it was a double and a home run by Texas State's Tara Oltmann that proved to be the difference as the Bobcats emerged with a 2-1 victory at the ULM Softball Complex on Friday, March 22.

Thibodeaux finished her evening by going 2-of-3 from the plate, while Pederson went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, as ULM (4-24, 1-6 Sun Belt) finished with seven hits as a team.

Adrianna Chavarria (2-7) took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts in five innings in the circle.

Texas State (13-15, 3-4) got its first runner aboard in the top of the first when Bailee Carter drew a one-out walk. After a steal moved Carter into scoring position, Oltmann sent a double into left-center field to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.

Clinging to a one-run lead in the top of the third, Oltmann's bat again proved lethal to ULM, as she drove the first pitch of the inning over the left field wall for her second home run of the season and a 2-0 advantage.

The Warhawks countered with one run in the bottom of the fifth after Pederson sent a one-out double down the left field line. Sydney McKay followed with a single into right, scoring Pederson in the process, to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Jessie Watts advanced McKay to second with a single through the right side of the infield, but a fielder's choice a fly out to right field end the frame.

The Warhawks would manage just one hit over the final two innings of action.

Meagan King (7-8) picked up the win for Texas State after tossing 4.2 innings, allowing one run on six hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Dalilah Barrera entered the game with a runner on and no outs in the bottom of the seventh and retired the next three ULM batters, including two strikeouts, to record her first save of the season.

ULM and Texas State play Game 2 of the Sun Belt three-game series on Saturday, March 23 at 2 p.m.
