ULM Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Coastal Carolina Saturday

MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 10-2 win in the opening game of a doubleheader with Coastal Carolina on Saturday, March 30, but the Chanticleers rebounded with an 8-0 victory in game two to claim the series.

Game 1: ULM 10, Coastal Carolina 2 (5 Innings)
The Warhawks got off to a fast start as Sydney McKay opened with a single to left field, moving to second on a fielding error. Two batters later, with McKay at second and Jayden Mount at first following a walk, Brie Wrobel worked the count to draw a walk and load the bases. Jessie Watts reached on a fielder's choice, scoring McKay to give ULM the 1-0 advantage.

Coastal Carolina broke through in the bottom of the second, when Alexis Alvino and Samantha Sack hit back-to-back home runs with two outs to give the Chanticleers a 2-1 advantage.

The lead was brief; however, as ULM scored four runs in the top of the third to build a 5-2 advantage. With two outs, Jessie Watts delivered an RBI double to left-center field, scoring Wrobel from second base. Megan Shaw followed with an RBI single down the left-field line, scoring Jaclyn Kresta from third to give the Warhawks the lead for good at 3-2. Korie Kreps came through with ULM's third-straight hit – a two-run single to shortstop – that scored Watts and Shaw.

The big inning for the Warhawks came in the top of the fifth when they tallied five runs on two hits while taking advantage of two CCU fielding errors. ULM loaded the bases, thanks to a lead-off single by Wrobel, a fielding error and walk. Shaw brought pinch runner Nykiah Hines home with a sacrifice fly to right field, and Kreps followed with an RBI single to right center, scoring Kresta as the Warhawks moved out to a 7-2 lead. Watts and Kreps scored on a throwing error by the second baseman for a 9-2 lead. Mount was credited with a sacrifice fly after her line out to right field scored Victoria Pederson from third for the final run of the game.

ULM got production throughout the lineup as seven different hitters combined for eight hits. Kreps finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored while Shaw went 1-for-2 and drove in two runs.

Adrianna Chavarria (3-8) went five innings for the Warhawks and allowed two runs on five hits with one walk and no strikeouts.

CCU starter Ashley Guillette (9-4) pitched 4.1 innings and surrendered nine runs (seven earned) on eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Game 2: Coastal Carolina 8, ULM 0 (5 innings)
Coastal Carolina (27-10, 6-6 Sun Belt) got a two-run homer from Kassidy Smith in the bottom of the first and never looked back en route to an 8-0 victory over ULM in Game 2 of the doubleheader, earning the series win in the process.

The Chanticleers added two runs in the bottom of the third as Stavi Augur provided an RBI single to left field and Alexis Alvino drew a bases loaded walk to score another run.

CCU exploded for four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth to close out the game. On the first pitch of the frame, Augur homered to right-center field. After Abbey Montoya tripled to center field, Alvino sent the first pitch she saw out of the park in left center as the Chanticleers built a 7-0 advantage. With one out, Samantha Sack ended the game as she homered on the first pitch to right center for the 8-0 final.

ULM (5-29, 2-10) managed just two hits in the game, getting singles from Sydney McKay (1-3) and Bailey Thibodeaux (1-2). Six of CCU's eight hits went for extra bases, including four home runs.

CCU starter Kaitlin Beasley-Polko (18-6) scattered two hits over five innings with three walks and three strikeouts.

Warhawk starter Murphy Williams (1-8) faced only two batters, allowing two runs on one hit with a walk.

ULM returns to action on Tuesday, April 2 with a non-conference game at Southeastern Louisiana at 5 p.m.
