ULM Loses Heartbreaker in Extra Innings at UTA, 8-7

ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington rallied from a 7-1 deficit to force extra innings, and a bases-loaded single down the right-field line by Bri Burchianti plated KJ Murphy with the game-winning run as the Mavericks opened the three-game Sun Belt series with an 8-7 walk-off win over ULM Friday, April 12.

ULM (7-32, 3-12 SBC) grabbed the early lead in the game when Jayden Mount homered over the left field wall with two outs in the top of the first inning.

The Warhawks stretched their lead to 4-0 in the top of the third after Sydney McKay and Korie Kreps delivered back-to-back one-out singles. Mount followed with a single to center field, scoring McKay from second for a 2-0 advantage. Two batters later, Bailey Thibodeaux reached on a throwing error by the catcher that allowed both Kreps and Mount to score for the four-run lead.

UTA (19-22, 7-9 SBC) got its first run of the game in the bottom of the third after a miscue in the infield allowed Laura Curry to reach base and Whitney Walton to cross the plate for a 4-1 ULM lead.

ULM's offense went back to work in the top of the fifth when McKay reached base on an error by the Mavs' pitcher. The Warhawks got back-to-back singles from Kreps and Mount to load the bases for Ana Hogan, who delivered a two-run single to right-center field for a 6-1 advantage. The final ULM run crossed the plate when Mount scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Brie Wrobel.

The six-run advantage remained intact for the Warhawks until the bottom of the seventh inning. UTA came through with six runs on four hits, including a double and three singles, and took advantage of three ULM errors to pull even at 7-7, forcing extra innings.

The Warhawks threatened to regain the lead in the top of the ninth as McKay opened the frame with a single up the middle and with one out Mount double to right center, but UTA reliever Allie Gardiner got out of the jam with a popout and groundout.

The Mavs loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth before Burchianti provided the game-winning hit down the right-field line.

The two teams combined for 15 runs, 24 hits and seven errors.

The top three hitters in the ULM lineup – McKay (3-for-5), Kreps (2-for-5) and Mount (4-for-5) – went a combined 9-for-15. Mount was responsible for her team's only extra base hits, with a home run and double.

Gardiner (3-4), who scattered four hits over five scoreless innings of relief and recorded two strikeouts, earned the win.

Adrianna Chavarria (5-10), who allowed four runs (one earned) and 10 hits over 8.1 innings, took the loss. Chavarria walked six and struck out two.

ULM and UTA play Game 2 of the weekend series on Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m. at Allan Saxe Field.
