ULM Softball Drops Doubleheader at UTA Sunday

ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington completed a three-game Sun Belt series sweep over ULM on Sunday, April 14 by taking both games of a doubleheader, 3-2 in 10 innings and 11-7.
 
Game 1: UTA 3, ULM 2 (10 innings)
The opening game of the doubleheader went 10 innings – the longest contest for the Warhawks this season.
 
ULM established a 1-0 lead in the third when Korie Kreps drew a two-out walk to extend the inning, and Jayden Mount followed with a double to right-center field, plating the first run of the game.
 
The Mavs answered in the fourth when Laura Curry led off the frame with a bunt single to third base. Aileen Garcia moved her teammate to third with a bunt before Reagan Wright grounded to short to move Curry homeward to tie the game at 1-1.
 
Kennedy Page led off the top of the fifth with a home run over the center-field wall to put ULM back on top 2-1.
 
The lead was brief as the Mavs answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth as Curry drove home the game-tying run with a double to center field that that scored Bri Burchianti from third.
 
The score would remain 2-2 until the bottom of the 10th when Melanie Mendoza led off the frame with a home run over the left-center field wall for the walk-off victory, 3-2.
 
Mount (3-5, RBI, double) led the way for the ULM offense, which pounded out nine hits in the game, including two that went for extra bases.
 
Randi Phillips (10-12), who allowed two hits over three scoreless innings in relief, picked up the win for the Mavs.
 
ULM's Murphy Williams (1-9), who worked 3.2 innings and allowed one run on five hits, took the loss. Williams walked three and recorded three strikeouts.
 
Game 2: UTA 11, ULM 7
UTA's Whitney Walton led off the bottom of the first with a double to right field. Three batters later, Aileen Garcia homered to left field to give the Mavs a 2-0 advantage.
 
The Warhawk offense went to work in the top of the second. Brie Wrobel opened the inning with a single up the middle and Bailey Thibodeaux followed with a single to left. Next, Murphy Williams sent a three-run homer over the left-center field wall as ULM claimed a 3-2 lead.
 
ULM (7-34, 3-14 Sun Belt) enjoyed its second multi-run inning in the third. With two on and one out, Wrobel extended the Warhawks lead to 6-2 on a three-run blast to center field.
 
The Mavs tallied one run in the bottom of the third on a two-out RBI single through the left side by Reagan Wright, cutting the ULM in half at 6-3.
 
UTA regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring seven runs on five hits and two errors. Laura Curry provided a two-run single to left center, Wright drove in a run with a single to right field and Brittany Wyllie added an RBI single to left field.
 
ULM pulled to within 10-7 as Jayden Mount homered to left center to lead-off the top of the fifth.
 
UTA (21-22, 9-9) got that run back in the bottom of the fifth as Curry picked up her third RBI of the game, with a single down the left-field line.
 
Randi Phillips (11-12) recorded her second win of the day, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits over three innings. Allie Gardiner, who pitched three scoreless innings in relief and allowed two hits with a walk and a strikeout, earned her second save of the season.
 
Adrianna Chavarria (5-11), who allowed four unearned runs on two hits, suffered the loss for ULM.
 
Offensively, the trio of Sydney McKay (2-for-4), Wrobel (3-for-3, 3 RBI, 2 runs) and Thibodeaux (3-for-4, run) went a combined 8-for-11 in Game 2.
 
ULM returns to action on Tuesday, April 16 with a non-conference road game at Mississippi Valley State at 5 p.m.
