ULM Softball Squanders Six-Run Lead; Loses at MVSU, 9-8

ITTA BENA, Miss. – Mississippi Valley State tallied seven of its nine runs in the final two innings of play to help the Delta Devils edge visiting ULM by a 9-8 margin in non-conference softball action on Tuesday, April 16.

MVSU (5-29) put four runs across the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning, capitalizing on a series of run-scoring singles by Demi Slater, Sharia Cormier and Kailyn Dunn to pull within two runs of the Warhawks at 8-6.

After holding ULM scoreless in the top of the sixth, the Delta Devils' offense immediately went to work with a triple by Jaylon Davis and a walk by DeShonte Smith to start the bottom of the frame. Two batters later, Dejanae Gage sent a three-run homer over the center-field wall to put MVSU in front to stay 9-8.

ULM (7-35) put its first run of the game on the board in the top of the first when Korie Kreps doubled to center field to score Sydney McKay.

After allowing one MVSU run in the bottom of the first, the Warhawks regained the lead in the second when McKay sent a two-run single to right field, scoring Jaclyn Kresta and Kennedy Page in the process. The fourth run of the game crossed the plate when McKay scored on an attempted steal by Kreps.

The second multi-run inning for the Warhawks came in the top of the fifth inning when with the bases loaded Brie Wrobel drew a walk for a 5-2 lead. Murphy Williams sent a single into right field, scoring Jayden Mount and Kreps as ULM extended its lead to 7-2. The final Warhawk run of the game crossed the plate on Bailey Thibodeaux's RBI groundout to shortstop for an 8-2 advantage.

The ULM offense was led by Mount, who closed the game 2-of-3 from the plate with a run scored. McKay, hitting from the leadoff spot, was responsible for the lone extra-base hit for the Warhawks, a double, as she finished 1-for-3 with 2 RBI and scored three runs.

Four pitchers went to the circle for the Warhawks, including Blaire Wilson (0-1), who took the loss after surrendering three runs on three hits while walking a trio of Delta Devil hitters over 1.1 innings.

MVSU's Alyssa Montes (1-0) earned the win after tossing 2.2 scoreless innings with a walk.

ULM will return home to entertain South Alabama in a three-game Sun Belt Conference series this weekend, beginning on Thursday, April 18 at 6 p.m.
