ULM Softball Splits Doubleheader; Wins Sun Belt Series Against USA

MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team claimed its first Sun Belt Conference series of the season when it split a doubleheader against South Alabama on Saturday, April 20. The Warhawks fell 11-2 (six innings) in the second game of the series, first of the doubleheader, before posting a 12-9 victory in Game 2 to earn their ninth win of the season.

Game 2: ULM 12, South Alabama 9
ULM (9-35, 5-16 Sun Belt) rebounded from a setback in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader by putting together a seven-run first inning.

Trailing 3-0 heading into the home half of first, due in large part to a bases-clearing triple by South Alabama's Abby Krzywiecki, Jayden Mount tied the game with a three-run home run to center field that plated both Korie Kreps and Sydney McKay. Three batters later, teammate Bailey Thibodeaux delivered a double to left-center field that loaded the bases for ULM. Kennedy Page seized the bases loaded opportunity for the Warhawks with a double to left-center field that scored Murphy Williams and Brie Wrobel to provide ULM with the 5-3 lead. Megan Shaw singled up the middle, moving to third on the throw, which scored Page from second for the sixth Warhawk run. The final ULM run of the inning crossed the plate when Shaw reached home on a grounder to second by Jaclyn Kresta.

The Jaguars (15-27, 5-17) took advantage of a second three-run inning in the third, slicing the lead to one, 7-6.

ULM countered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, scoring the first run on a single to center field by Kreps. Two batters later, Mount connected on double to left-center field, scoring Kreps and resulting in the 9-6 lead. The Warhawks put their third run of the inning across when Mount scored on an error at third as Victoria Pederson stole second.

The final two runs of the game for ULM came in the bottom of the fifth. Kresta was responsible for the first run of the inning when she laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored Shaw from third. McKay sent a two-out solo home run over the right field wall for the 12-7 lead on the first pitch.

USA scored its final two runs of the game in the top of the seventh by virtue of a two-run home run off the bat of Kennedy Cronan, which also scored Victoria Ortiz. ULM allowed one hit to Kvistad, a single to third, but collected back-to-back outs to end the game with a three-run advantage.

Four ULM hitters finished with multiple hits, including McKay (2-for-4, RBI, 2 runs, HR), Kreps (2-for-4, RBI, 2 runs), Mount (2-for-3, 4 RBI, 2 runs, HR, double) and Shaw (2-for-3, 2 runs, triple).

Jessie Watts (2-7) earned her second win of the series after tossing a complete game, 13-hitter against USA. Watts surrendered nine runs, issued two walks and recorded one strikeout.

USA's Alexis Reid (10-15), who went 3.1 innings and allowed 10 runs (six earned) on eight hits with two walks and a strikeout, took the loss.

Game 1: South Alabama 11, ULM 2 (6 Innings)
Sydney McKay opened the bottom of the first with a bunt single and quickly stole second base. Two batters later, with Jayden Mount at the plate, McKay moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a throwing error by the catcher.

South Alabama countered with seven runs in the top of the second, starting with a Katelyn Gruich home run to lead off the frame to tie the game at 1-1. Leading 2-1, Kennedy Cronan doubled to left, scoring Brittani Reid and Victoria Ortiz to stretch the Jaguar advantage to three runs. The final runs of the inning crossed the plate when Kamdyn Kvistad sent a three-run homer over the right-center field wall, scoring Cronan and Ortiz for a 7-1 USA lead.

Megan Shaw kept the second inning alive for the Warhawks with a two-out walk. Shaw stole second and motored home for the second run of the game on a throwing error by the catcher.

A sacrifice fly to left field by the Jaguars' Dayla Gulledge brought home Abby Krzywiecki for the eighth run of the game and first of the third inning. Reid singled to third base, plating Lyric Cabral in the process, as the USA lead grew to 9-2.

The final two runs of the game came in the top of the sixth for the Jaguars. Kvistad reached base on a fielder's choice and was replaced by pinch runner Jordyn Calderon on the base pads. Two batters later, Cabral loaded the bases with a fielder's choice. Holly Stewart followed with a two-run double to left-center field, scoring Calderon and Gruich, resulting in the 11-2 final.

ULM closed the game with three hits, two of which came off Mount's bat (2-for-2). The Jaguar lineup amassed 15 hits, receiving two each by Reid, Cronan, Gruich, Cabral and Megan Harris.

USA's Samantha Yarbrough (3-9) earned the win after allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits with four walks and nine strikeouts in six innings.

Adrianna Chavarria (5-12), who allowed seven runs on six hits with two walks, took the loss for the Warhawks.

ULM returns to action on Tuesday, April 23 when it heads to LSU for a 6 p.m. non-conference clash.
