ULM Softball Falls at No. 10 LSU, 8-0

BATON ROUGE, La. – A five-run fifth inning by the 10th-ranked LSU softball team proved to be the difference as the Tigers posted an 8-0 victory over visiting ULM in five innings on Tuesday night (April 23) at Tiger Park.

The Tigers (38-11) put their first run of the game on the board in the second when Elyse Thornhill lifted a 1-0 pitch over the right-center field wall for her eighth home run of the season.

Two innings later, LSU took advantage of a double to left-center field by Amanda Sanchez, scoring Savannah Stewart for the game's second run. Thornhill again delivered in the clutch for the Tigers, this time with an RBI single to right, scoring Shemiah Sanchez for a 3-0 advantage.

The big inning of the game for the Tigers came in the fifth when they scored five runs on five hits and took advantage of three ULM errors. With two runners on base, Michaela Schlattman delivered a single to right field that scored Amanda Doyle and sent Thornhill to third. That was followed by a base hit to right by Amber Serrett, scoring Doyle for the 5-0 LSU lead.

The sixth run of the game crossed the plate as Serrett attempted to steal second, allowing Schlattman to move home from third on the errant throw. LSU moved its lead to 7-0 when Claire Weinberger delivered a single that allowed Serrett to score from second on a throwing error. The final run crossed the plate for the LSU on a walk of Sanchez, which scored Weinberger from third with the bases-loaded.

LSU finished with 11 hits in the contest, while ULM (9-37) was limited to three off the bats of Jayden Mount, Brie Wrobel and Megan Shaw. Both Mount and Wrobel recorded doubles in the contest.

ULM sent the trio of Murphy Williams, Adrianna Chavarria and Jessie Watts to the mound, with Williams (1-10) taking the loss after surrendering three runs on five hits and three walks.

Maribeth Gorsuch (11-2) was the pitcher of record for LSU, picking up her 11th win of the season as she scattered three hits over five scoreless innings with three walks and four strikeouts.

ULM returns home to entertain Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday, April 24 at 6 p.m.
