ULM Softball Stands 12 Base Runners in 8-2 Loss to SFA

MONROE, La. – Seven runs over the final two innings, including four in the seventh, helped Stephen F. Austin earn an 8-2 victory over ULM in a non-conference game at the ULM Softball Complex on Wednesday, April 24.

The Warhawks (9-38) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Sydney McKay led off the bottom of the frame with a single through the right side of the infield. Two batters later, with McKay at third following a stolen base and a grounder, Jayden Mount sent a single to left field to plate McKay from third for a 1-0 advantage.

SFA (30-17) managed to tie the game in the top of the fourth. With one out, Brittany Crawford roped a single to center field, and two batters later, Madison Clements delivered an RBI single to center field, scoring Crawford from second to knot the score at 1-1.

The Ladyjacks snapped the tie with a three-run sixth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, SFA got a two-run single from Bryana Novegil and Lauren Becker picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice as Emily Wolfe scored from third for a 4-1 lead.

ULM got one of those runs back in the bottom of the sixth as SFA starter Kassidy Wilbur walked four-straight batters and McKay trotted home to cut the deficit to 4-2.

SFA's offense went back to work in the top of the seventh, tacking on four runs on three hits and an error. With runners at second and third and two outs, Wolfe came through with a two-run single to right field to extend the Ladyjacks lead to 6-2. Back-to-back walks to Novegil and Becker loaded the bases and Margarita Corona followed with an infield single to shortstop, scoring Wolfe from third and pushing the lead to 7-2. SFA's final run of the game crossed the plate when Alex Hedspeth drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Novegil from third.

ULM was outhit, 14-4, and stranded 12 base runners. Korie Kreps reached base three times for the Warhawks, earning two walks and recording the team's only extra-base hit, a double in the fourth inning.

Wilbur (17-11), who went 5.2 innings and allowed two runs on four hits with 10 walks and three strikeouts, picked up the win for the Ladyjacks. Ashley Kriesel recorded the final four outs, including a strikeout, to earn her second save of the season.

Murphy Williams (1-11) took the loss after surrendering seven runs (three earned) on seven hits with four walks and one strikeout in 2.2 innings. ULM starter Adrianna Chavarria pitched 4.1 innings and permitted only one run on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
