Warhawks Drop Softball Series Opener at Georgia State, 10-2

ATLANTA – Georgia State amassed 13 hits and produced multiple runs in three innings en route to a 10-2 victory over ULM in the Sun Belt series opener Friday, April 26.
 
The Panthers scored all the runs they needed in a six-run second inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Caitlin Ray hit a grand slam over the right-field wall as GSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Three-straight singles resulted in another run as Remington Hasty's RBI hit through the right side of the infield scored Reagan Morgan for a 5-0 advantage. The final run of the inning came on Gabby Benson's sacrifice fly to left field scored Kristin Hawkins from third.
 
ULM (9-39, 5-16 Sun Belt) scratched out two runs in the top of the third. Jaclyn Kresta opened the frame with an infield single to third. Megan Shaw reached on a two-base throwing error by the pitcher, moving Kresta to third. Sydney McKay's RBI groundout to third base put the Warhawks on the board as Kresta scored from third. With Korie Kreps at the plate, Shaw scored on a wild pitch as ULM pulled to within 6-2.
 
Georgia State's offense went back to work in the bottom of the third. With one out, Baylee Sexton tripled to left field. Two batters later, Ray sent Sexton home with an RBI double to left center and Morgan followed with a run-scoring double to center as the Panthers built an 8-2 advantage.
 
GSU (8-41, 5-17) ended the game by scoring two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth. Jess Neadow led off the inning with an infield single to shortstop, and two batters later, Arden Jobe delivered an RBI double to right center, scoring Neadow from second. With two outs, Morgan doubled to left field, scoring pinch runner Alyssa Ward from second for the final run of the contest.
 
The Panthers, who outhit the Warhawks 13-3, recorded seven extra-base hits.
 
GSU's Emily Soles (4-13) went five innings and allowed one earned run on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
 
ULM starter Andrianna Chavarria (5-13), who surrendered six runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 1.1 innings, took the loss.
 
The Warhawks and Panthers play Game 2 of the series Saturday, April 27 at noon CT.
