ULM Softball Splits Friday Doubleheader Against Georgia Southern

MONROE, La. – With inclement weather in the forecast for Sunday, the ULM softball team played a doubleheader on Friday, April 5 to open the three-game series against Georgia Southern. The Warhawks outlasted the Eagles in the opening game by a 14-13 margin but suffered a 9-1 setback in five innings in Game 2.

Game 1 Recap: ULM 14, Georgia Southern 13
The offensive battle in Game 1 began in the opening frame when Georgia Southern established a 4-0 lead. With two outs, the Eagles got an RBI single to center field from Logan Harrell and a 3-run homer to center from Macy Coleman.

ULM answered in the home half of the first with five runs on five hits. The Warhawks scored their first run, thanks to a bases loaded walk to Jaclyn Kresta. Megan Shaw and Brie Wrobel delivered back-to-back RBI singles before Korie Kreps provided a two-run double to left center to put ULM on top 5-4.

The Warhawks extended their lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the second as Kreps came through with a two-run single to right field with two outs, and ULM got a two-out RBI single to left field from Kresta in the bottom of the third for an 8-4 advantage.

The Warhawks appeared to break the game open with a five-run fourth. With the bases loaded, two runners scored on a throwing error by the Georgia Southern second baseman and Jayden Mount followed with a two-run single to right field. Two batters later, Kresta sent Mount home with an RBI single to left as ULM built a 13-4 lead.

Georgia Southern chipped away at the Warhawks' nine-run lead over the next three innings, scoring three runs in the fifth, four in the sixth and two more in the seventh to pull even at 13-13.

Victoria Pederson opened the bottom of the seventh with a bunt single, moved to second on Sydney McKay's sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a foul out to the first baseman and scored the game-winning run when the Eagle shortstop dropped a pop up off the bat of Bailey Thibodeaux.

ULM pounded out 13 hits, including only one extra-base hit. Three Warhawks recorded multiple hits, including Mount (3-for-6, 2 RBI, 3 runs scored), Kresta (2-for-3, 3 RBI, 2 runs scored) and Kreps (3-for-4, season-high 4 RBI, run scored).

Adrianna Chavarria (5-8) picked up her fifth win of the season after allowing 10 runs on 13 hits over six innings with three walks and three strikeouts.

Georgia Southern's Shelby Barfield (1-2), who surrendered three unearned runs on three hits with five walks and two strikeouts, took the loss.

The combination of Ashleigh Morton in the circle, who limited ULM (7-30, 3-11 Sun Belt) to two hits over five innings, along with a seven-run fourth inning powered Georgia Southern to a 9-1 victory in Game 2 Friday.

Georgia Southern (17-19, 4-10) used a pair of home runs by Faith Shirley and Jess Mazur to establish a 2-0 lead in the first two innings of the contest.

The Eagles' lead ballooned to nine runs in a seven-run fourth inning, highlighted by a 2-run double to right-center field by Ellington Day.
