Warhawks Drop Regular Season Finale to Cajuns

Monroe, La. - The Ragin' Cajuns scored used three big innings to pull away from ULM, downing the Warhawks 19-8 in seven innings in the regular season finale Saturday afternoon at Warhawk Field.

The Cajuns (27-29 overall, 15-15 Sun Belt) scored three runs in the third inning, then added four more in the fifth before pounding out nine runs in the top of the seventh inning, setting up the game to end by run rule.

The Cajuns took the lead in the top of the first inning when Hayden Cantrelle and Hunter Kasuls hit back-to-back doubles to open the game for a 1-0 lead. The Warhawks tied the game at one in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by Chad Bell, scoring Joey Jordan.

The Cajuns added a single run in the second inning and three more in the third to lead 5-1. Bell cut the deficit to three hitting a solo home run to dead center field, clearing the batter's eye. According to former ULM player and coach Jeff Schexnaider, it is believed to be just the fifth time a Warhawk player has cleared the batter's eye since 1984, with Bell joining Terry Mathews, Joe Sims, Everett Reagan and Nick Wade on the list. It was Bell's 18th homer of the season, placing him second on the all-time single season home run list in ULM history, just one behind Corey Taylor's 19 home run season in 1998. Bell also extended his hitting streak to 19 games.

The momentum of Bell's blast was quickly lost, as the Cajuns tallied five more runs in the top of the fourth inning, including a three-run homer from Kasuls, his third homer of the series. After the Warhawks struck back for a run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Cade Harper, the Cajuns unloaded in the top of the seventh inning for nine runs. ULM tallied four runs in the bottom of the inning, including a two-RBI double by Buckman, but the game ended by run rule with the Cajuns leading 19-8.

Buckman finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs to lead the Warhawk offense. Kasuls was 6-for-6 with five RBIs for the Cajuns.

The Warhawks will make their first postseason appearance since 2014 on Tuesday when they play a yet-to-be-determined opponent in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Conway, S.C. Game time and opponent will be announced Saturday night. Links to live video, audio and stats will be posted at ULMWarhawks.com.
